READING COMPHENHENSION
READ THESE TWO PASSAGES AND PUT THE BEST OPTION ON THE BLUE SQUARE
PASSAGE I.
Carmen felt unhappy about the Star Club Map Race. “I don’t want to
race, because I’m too slow,” she said. “Everyone will make fun of me.”
Then her cousin Risa said, “Running quickly isn’t everything. This is a
different kind of race. “ She put Carmen’s name on the race list.
On the day of the race, Mr. Zablon from the Star Club explained the
rules. “When I say ‘Go,’ run from here to the school. There you’ll get
special maps to help you find six hidden paper stars. The person who
gets back here first with all six stars wins.”
When the race began, Carmen reached the school last. She felt bad,
but she took her map and quickly found her first three stars.
It was fun to follow the map. Carmen soon forgot all about being
laughed at.
When Carmen got to the finish line, the other kids were already there.
Carmen started to feel bad again. Then Mr. Zablon saw her stars and
told her that she had won. Carmen was the only one to gather all six
stars!

PASSAGE II.
Linny was spending part of her summer vacation in Egypt. Egypt is a
very old country in North Africa with a large desert area. Linny’s
father and his assistant were there for the summer. They were
digging up and studying old bones with other scientists.
One day Linny’s father took her into the desert to show her the place
where he and the other scientists were working. Linny had never been
in a desert before. The sun was like a huge fire in the sky. It surprised
Linny that it could be so hot. She had never felt such heat before. And
the hot, dry air made her feel thirsty. To make matters worse, a gust
of wind blew sand in her face. All of this made Linny very homesick.
The scientists did not have anything that Linny could do. Soon she
became bored watching her father and the others studying the old
bones, so she walked a short distance away.
The sun was so hot that Linny felt as if she were in an oven. The
atmosphere was thick and heavy. Linny was sweating. She wanted to
take off her hat and shoes, but her father had warned her against
doing that. “The strong rays of the sun will hurt you, and the sand
could burn your feet,” her father had said.
Then Linny noticed a desert tree not far away. There was some shade
beneath it. She decided to go there and sit in the shade. On the way,
she amused herself. Linny had a very good imagination, and
whenever she got bored she would let it amuse her. Now, she
imagined that she was lost in the desert.
“You must find a water hole soon!” she cried. “Or you will die of
thirst!” Then she grabbed her throat as if she were choking, and she
fell onto the sand laughing.
She wished she had a tall glass of ice water, and she sighed. Then she
laughed again, remembering that in another week, she and her family
would be going home to the United States.
She got up and hurried toward the tree.
