The evolution of fitness

Fitness has changed a lot in the past 50 years. It all started with keeping healthy and it has turned into
a whole lifestyle.

Diets and meal plans

First of all, scientists and dieticians have discovered many different

diets to accomplish all kinds of results. Dietists have come up with
plans to lose/gain weight, to burn fat, to have clear skin, to flush out
substances that are considered unhelpful or harmful (Detox Diets)…
In 2012 Michael Mosley created one of his most popular diets named
the 5:2 diet which meant that it was intermittent fasting to decrease
the amount of calorie intake and therefore lose weight. There are
thousands of very healthy and safe diets that we can do however
throughout the years we have seen dangerous diets and meal plans.
For example, Tracy Anderson, a fitness guru invented the baby food
diet which consisted in eating baby food which got people to eat a
calorie intake way too low for an adult and it led people to not being
able to function properly and leading to certain issues.

Tracking the progress

Furthermore, now people can track their journeys easier. Through

the years, we have got to the point where we can track the amount
of calories we take, the amount we burn, our heart rate, the amount
of steps we take per day, the water lost and many more things. There
are apps like for example Strava which allows you to track your
runs, walks, swims and bike rides giving your the pace, kilometers,
heart rate and the elevation of the route. There are also apps like Jett
Fit which allows people to write their workout routines and track the
amount of reps they do and the weight that is used for each exercise
and therefore track the progress achieved throughout the years. My
Fitness Pal is another app that has become well known as it helps
you keep track of your calorie intake as well as fat, protein…

Sports and women

Another great thing that we have now is that there are many ways of staying fit as the amount of
sports and workout plans have increased. The gym has become a lifestyle for women as well as men.
Before sports like football, boxing, snowboarding… were seen as just for man. However during these
past decades women have started to show incredible talent in these sports.

The amount of different equipment we can see at a gym is unbelievable. It just keeps developing and
evolving. The first piece of workout equipment was created in 1968, which was a stationary bike and
now there are machines to workout every single muscle of your body.
There are new sports which are starting to be practiced but there are other ways that people have
found of keeping fit. One of them being Exergaming, which consists of practicing sports from home
by playing video games, for example on the Wii.

Supplements

Supplements have been a fitness accessory for many people as back in the day, people were only to
stay fit and healthy by eating but now there are supplements which help and facilitate accomplishing
your goals. Things like protein shakes, creatine, pre-workout, vitamins, and caffeine have become
popular things amongst fitness lovers. If you want to just shed fat and put on lean muscle, you can
find a supplement that will help you do just that. If you want to grow huge muscles and put on weight,
there are supplements that can do that.

Strong not skinny

The stereotype of what being fit looks like has also changed a lot. Before being fit meant for a lot of
people being skinny and losing weight. Now there are a lot of influencers and famous people
changing that and making people know that being fit is not being skinny it's better to be strong not just
physically but mentally too.

Fitfluencers

Many people have become fit influencers which are

basically there to promote brands of everything
related to fitness. Furthermore they share their
workout routines so people can copy or get ideas
from their workouts. Some people have even turned
this fitness influencer deal into a fully fledged career
and for example Kayla Itsines who was one of the
first fitness influencers to go viral has made millions
of dollars since 2009.

These influencers have motivated more people to

start their fitness journey as it is a lifestyle that can
help not just your body but your mind too. They have
also allowed working out to be free as some of these
influencers film body weight workouts with no
equipment that can easily be done at home.

A way of dealing with problems

Working out has become a way of dealing with problems. It is a time of the day where you can focus
on yourself. It has been scientifically proven that working out makes us feel happier and gets us in a
better mood. Whether it's running, yoga or spinning they all help us stay calm and it keeps us in a
good mood. Doctors have even gotten to the point of prescribing exercise for a whole range of mental
illnesses.
Many people used to view the people who worked out as people who wanted to lose weight or to
become muscular. I have been doing sports since I was a kid and before it was just like a hobby but
during the past few years it has become a lifestyle that has improved my mental health at an amazing
rate. There are different ways in which I have benefited from exercising regularly besides just getting
stronger. It has helped me become more organized, it has made me more independent, it has helped
me make better decisions and it has motivated me to take on new challenges in life. Fitness has shown
me that everything can change and that if you put your mind to something you can accomplish your
goals.

Getting fit correctly has thousands of benefits. It makes you have

more energy throughout the day, it boosts your confidence and self
esteem, better mood, more outgoing, less likely to get injured easily.

In conclusion, fitness has made a very big evolution in these

past decades. People have started to take fitness as a lifestyle.
If we look at this from a business point of view we can see that
this fitness lifestyle evolution has helped the economy a lot as
this industry allowed thousands of businesses to incorporate
into the market. This has allowed many people to get job
opportunities. Furthermore, being physically active reduces the
risks of having health issues and therefore the medical costs
decrease.
