After completion of Assignment-1 students will able to understand the
LO 1.1: State the concept of management functions, roles, skills of a manager and the different
theories of management.
LO 3.2: Demonstrate organization’s role in ethics, diversity, and social responsibility.

Assignment-1
Please read the case “Who’s to Blame for the College Admissions Scandal?” given on Page
number 112, Chapter 3– “The Manager’s Changing Work Environment and Ethical
Responsibilities” available in your textbook/e-textbook “Management: A Practical
Introduction” 10th edition by Angelo Kinicki, & Denise B. Soignet and answer the following
questions:

QUESTIONS
Q1. What is the underlying problem in this case from the perspective of federal government, the parents,
and the prospective college students? (3 Marks)
Q2. Why do you think the parents were willing to play such a significant and risky role in their kid’s
college admissions? (3 Marks)
Q3. How do you think the general environment, particularly economic, demographic, international and
sociocultural forces, fed into the admissions scandal? (3 Marks)
Q4. Are the children who were aware of the cheating scheme purely victims in this situation, or should
they also be considered unethical? Explain your answer using one of the four approaches to deciding
ethical dilemmas. (3 Marks)
Q5. Based on what you have learned about Rick Singer, his involvement, and his decision to cooperate
in the investigation, where would you place his level of moral development? Explain your answer. (3

ANSWERS:
1. The answer will be in points
 Federal government:
The underlying problem is moral and ethical as the Feral rules and regulations.
The parents and students totally participated in the unethically crim and they break the law
through using bribes. So, for that, the federal are not responsible to solve such crime but the can
investigate and find out what and why this happened and how avoid from happing again in future.
 Parents:
The main issue that makes the parents doing such that were environmental and social pressure
that caused by people and difficult rules of college that push the parent to do such thing and
paying a bribe.
 Student:
The opinion from them almost similar to their parent, the rules and regulation for registering
are more difficult. More over that, this will help them to be in good and respective such college.
But the federal caught them.

 As we know that, everyone wants a good education and good certificate to his kids so this
the main reason for the parents.
 In fact, the parent was looking to have good social looking at their kids and to have good
certificate, by getting this certificate that may get a good job.
 The difficulty and complexity of the registration and accepting their kids in college made
them doing this bad practise which is giving bribe.

 As economic
The greater number of unemployed people was one of the parents’ issues mean their kids will
not get job in the future.
Education fees will be more and normal people cannot apply for these college.
 As demographical
With the increasing development in the country and people, parent always pushing their kids to
complete their study, in fact, as their opinion if they didn’t do that the less chance to tier kids to
get good job in future.
 International
It is the change of rules, global system and politics. Nowadays the person with certificate has more
opportunity and have more power.
 Sociocultural
It is the trends that affecting people society. With increasing number of students, the less chance to
be in a good college.
Some of students think that if he in good college he is the best from other. In fact, that is not true.
Other than that, more students prefer to study online rather than attending in classes.

As I believe the student will not be considered as victim nor criminal. We can categorize as
cheater. They knew their parents were doing unethical practise but they didn’t informed the right
people about the all bad organization.

To conclude that Ric Singer is under Level-1
The explanation for the levels as
1-Level -1:

Preconventional, the people whom they follow the rules


2- Level-2:
Conventional, the people whom conformist but slavish generally adhering to expectation.
3- Level-3:
Postconventional, people whom follow their own values.
