Keban dam built to make use the Euphrates river irrigation and energy potential
Karstic rock known as the Keban marble supports the dams foundation
Problem due to leakage of water from the reservoir which occurred near the lecft abutment, this
was then remediated by carefully grouting this area (this was discovered before the reservoir was
fille with water by Azic Ertunc.
Although grouting was done leakge still occurred after the dam was filled, 7-8m^/s pf water leaked
at a constant volume.
During the excavation s of the dam basement the cavities were discovered including the Crab cavity
which was then made to be positioned parallel to the dam,
Outcrops of the karstic marbles were discovered from the left abutment of the dam to the Keban
creek. On the surface of the Karstic marble rock unit cavities were discovered on the left abutment
of the dam, these cavities were filled with sediments with thin beds. These sediments were also
petrified daigentically there after folded and fissured
After the dam was filled to a water level of 850m leakage if water from the already discovered
sinkhole caused by the dissolution of the dolomitic unit disappear by making a whirlpool within the
Crab Cavity.
The Petek Cavity was also through following the trailof water leakage from the Keban reservoir
To prevent further leakage through the Crab Cavity it was surrounded by a concrete wall and to
prevent water leakage through the Petek Cavity it was filled with rock blocks making the leakage
capacity of the Dam to decrease to 7 to 8 m^3/s.
