Culture and International Business

Lesson 4
Cultural differences has a vital role in trade especially internationally. One factor is
technology, it made the business much better, accessible and easier. Understanding one’s
culture is important because it is a sign or respect. It also helps to foster effective
communication, a vital factor in business success. It also helps in developing an appreciation
for another culture. Each culture has underlying themes. Values and attributes such as
frugality, trust and endurance may be viewed differently in other countries. In some cases,
these themes may translate into varying expectations for business partnerships and
negotiations. I have learned also that in involving in International business, communication is
important. It is because n many cultures, communication, including non-verbal, may be subtle
and nuanced, rather than the direct approach often associated with the United States. Learn
how people in your new market use words and phrases, hand gestures, body language and
other cues to communicate. Find out which non-verbal gestures used in our own country and
it its difference towards other place that are acceptable and which are not in order to avoid
offending or embarrassing a new business partner. Other strategies can also be incorporated
in order to ease communication, including using visual references as much as possible, and
allowing for pauses or silence during presentations. In my understanding also, in terms of
decision making, it must unanimous and must be think critically for the means of smooth
business transaction. In this lesson, I have learned that we must know first what is the culture
of our business partners before negotiating to avoid discrepancy and also to show respect.
