12. The rate at which people consume Pringles potato chips in the U.S. is given by , where P is
measured in millions of cans per year and t is measured in years from the beginning of 1990.
a. The consumption rate triples every 4 years and the consumption rate at the beginning of 1990 was 8 million
cans per year. Find C and k.
b. Find the average rate of consumption of Pringles over the last 13-year period beginning January 1, 1992.
Indicate units of measure.
b. Sketch a solution to the differential equation on the slope field above through the point (1, 1).
c. Find the particular solution to the differential equation for the initial point (1, 1).
14. The rate of change of the amount of deer is directly proportional to the amount present. The Wild Game
Commission estimates that there are 495 deer in a particular state park. It is decided that to
reduce overcrowding, 10% of the deer will be removed from the park each year.
Let P(t ) represent the number of deer in the park at time t years, when t≥0 . Let the constant of
proportionality be k.
a. Solve the differential equation for P that models this situation. When solving for k, round your answer to
four decimal places.
b. Using your result from part (a), compute how many deer are present after 5 years. Round your answer to
the nearest deer.
c. After this 5-year period, no human intervention is taken and the deer population grows again. From that
time, the deer population increases at a rate directly proportional to , where the contant of
proportionality is a new value of k. Find an equation for the deer population, P, in terms of t and k for
this 5-year period. (Round your value of C to the nearest integer).
d. Using the growth model from part (c), 1 year later, the deer poplation is 350. Find k rounded to
four decimal places.
e. Using the growth model from part (c), and the value of k from part (d), find .
