ANNEX A, zou © Automatic controller will start pump if sytem demand is not satisfied (eg, pressure low, deluge sipped) For manual operation, activate switch, pushbutton, oor manal start handle. Circuit breaker tripping ‘mechanism should be set so that it will not operate when current in circuit i excessively large, Steam-Driven Pump. sear turbine diving & fire pump should sways be kept warmed up to permit instant opera: tion at fallrated speed. The automatic starting. of the turbine should not be dependent om any mantal valve ‘operation or period of lowespeed operation. If the pop sifety valve oft the casing Blows, steams should be shut off dnd the exhaust piping examined for a possible closed tube of an obstsicted portion of piping. Steam turbines are provided with governors to maintain speed ata prede- termined point, wath some adjustment for higher or lower speeds. Desired speeds below this range ean be obtained Dy throng the main throule vale Diesel Engine Driven Pump. Yo start a diesel engine-driven pimp, the operator should be familar beforedand with the operation ofthis pe of equipment. The instruction book issued by the engine and control manufacturer should be suidied to this end. The storage batteries should always be maintained in good order to ensure prompt, satsactory operation of this equipment (ie, cheek cleewolyte level and spect grav nspeet eable ‘conditions, corrosion, etc) 2 @ a Where minimumsun timers are provided, the pumps will continue to operate at churn pressure beyond the stop setting. The final pressures should ® Stadt Revisions ext deletions and fgure/table revisions += Section deletions. nol exceed the pressure rating of the system compo nents. Automatic Recorder "The performance of all fire pumps ‘Should be automatically indicated on a pressure recorder {o provide a record of pump operation and assistance in fire loss investigation. A.14.2.6.1 The test equipment should be furnished by either the authority having jurisdiction, the installing contractor, or the pump manufacturer, depending upon the prevaling arrangements made between the aforementioned parties, The equipment should inchide, but not necessarily be limited to, the following: (1) Equipment for Use with Test Valve Header 50 O15 m) lengths of 2% in. (65 mm) lined hose should be provided including Underwriters Laboratories’ play pipe nozzles as needed to flow required volume of water, Where test iter is provided, however, these might not be needed. Instrumentation, The following test instruments should be ‘of high quality, accurate, and in good repair 2 (2) Clamp-on volt/ammeter (b) Test gauges (©) Tachometer (2) Pitot tube with gauge (for use with hose and nozzle) (8) Instrumentation Caliération. All tes instrumentation should be calibrated. by an approved testing and. calibration facility within the 12 months prior to the test. Calibration documentation should be available for review by the authority having jurisdiction, A majority of the test equipment used for acceptance and annual testing has never been calibrated. This equipment ean Ihave errors of L brated test equ results, to 30 percent in readings. The use of uncalie ment can lead to inaceurately reported test While itis desirable to achieve a true chum condition (no flow) during the test for comparison to the manufacturer's certified pump test characteristic curve, it might not be possi ble in all circumstances. Pumps with circulation relief valves will discharge a small amount of water, even when no water is flowing into the fire protection system. The small discharge through the circulation relic! valve should not be shut off uring the test since it is necessary to keep the pump from overheating. For pumps with circulation relief valves, the mini ‘mum flow condition in the testis expected to be the situation where no water is flosring to the fire protection system but a small flow is present through the circulation eliet valve. During a test on a pump with a pressure relief valve, the pres sure reli valve should not open because these valves are fit filled purely as a safety precaution to prevent ‘overpressirization during overspeed conditions Overspeed conditions should not be present during the test, so the pressure relief valve should not open, When pressure relief valves ate installed on systems to relieve pressure under normal operating conditions, and if a true churn condition is desired during the acceptance test, the system discharge valve ‘can be closed and the pressure relief valve can be adjusted to eliminate the flow. The pressure readings can be quickly noted land the pressure relief valve adjusted again to allow flow and relief of pressure. After this onestime test, a reference net pres sure can be noted with the relief valve open so that the relief valve can remain open during subsequent annual tess with the N= New material 2019 Eaton
