The Ivatans of Batanes

● The province of Batanes is made up of three tiny

islands in the northernmost part of the Philippines.
● Limestone houses and the Vakul are part of
Batanes’ unique culture.
● They build their houses with meter-thick walls made
of limestone.
● Vakul is a special headgear worn by the Ivatan
women to protect them against sunlight and rain while
tending to their fields. Another unique sight one will encounter during a visit
to Batanes.The vakul is made from the fiber of the Vuyavuy palm.
● In addition, they are honest and helpful people. These traits can be gleaned
in the manner they deal with each other as well as the way they welcome
visitors.
