2021/2022 High School Athenaeum/Lyceum Syllabus

Athenaeum/Lyceum Teacher: Dr. Kozinski Room: 221

Course Description
Athenaeum Definition: “an institution for the promotion of literary or scientific
learning; a library or reading room” 1 The Athenaeum Period is set aside for scholars to
develop their study skills. It is a time for silent individual study and reading. The ability to
concentrate on one’s work for a prolonged period of time is a skill necessary for success in
college and throughout one’s chosen career. The teacher’s highest priority is to maintain a
quiet library atmosphere for ALL scholars.
Following Athenaeum is the Lyceum Period. Lyceum is the school near Athens
where Aristotle taught. The term was adopted by US citizens in Massachusetts in the 1820’s
to describe a movement that offered attendees the prospect of self-improvement through
lectures on literary, scientific and moral topics. On Mondays and Wednesdays, scholars
will have the opportunity for tutoring with teacher and collaboration with peers on
homework assignments. On Tuesdays and Thursdays, scholars may participate in Personal
Interest Groups.
