PERFORMANCE TASK 3: Laboratory Equipment

Please send your answer here for Experiment 2 laboratory equipments.docx No cheating in any
forms.
Answer only the Critical Thinking part questions 1-5
Enumerate and give a brief description of the following:
1. Draw the following: 5pts

• Oswad folin – a special pipette used in measuring viscous fluid such as whole blood.

• Volumetric (transfer) pipette – allow the user to measure a volume of solution extremely
precisely. Volumetric pipettes are commonly used to make laboratory solutions from a base stock
as well as prepare solutions for titration.

• Serological pipette - The serological pipette is a laboratory instrument that transfers liquids
measured in volume by ml. Most have graduations on the side for measuring the liquid being
dispensed or aspirated. An important step when culturing or plating cells is the even distribution
throughout a solution.

• Mohr pipette - is a graduated pipet that is designed to deliver small portions of a liquid or solution.
These portions are determined by recording the difference between the initial and final volume
readings.

• Micropipette - micropipette is a common yet an essential laboratory instrument

used to accurately and precisely transfer volumes of liquid in the microliter
range. It has two main components: the body and the tip.
2. What are the different types of pipette bub? 1 pt

• Rubber bulb
• Pipet Filler
• Pipet aid
• Pipet pumper
3. 2 types of pipette according to drainage. Explain briefly. 1pt

• Blow out
o It has a continuous etched ring or two small continuous rings located near the top of the
pipet. A pipette calibrated to deliver its normal volume by permitting it first to drain and
then blowing out the last drop held in the tip.
• Self-draining
o Allows the content to drain by gravity the tip of the pipet. It should not be in contact with
the accumulating fluid in the receiving vessels during drainage except mohr pipet.

4. 2 types of pipette according to use. Explain briefly 1pt

• Measuring/ Graduated
o A graduated pipette is a pipette with its volume, in increments, marked along the tube. It
is used to accurately measure and transfer a volume of liquid from one container to
another. It is made from plastic or glass tubes and has a tapered tip.
• Volumetric/Transfer
o Volumetric Pipettes are designed to very accurately transfer a specific amount of
solution. These pipets can only be used to deliver the volume of liquid for which it is
calibrated. Volumetric pipets have narrow tips and a bulb-like expansion in the middle.
