Introduction
The aim of this booklet is to exemplify standards for those teaching Cambridge IGCSE Arabic 0544, and to
show examples of very good answers for Questions 1, 2 and 3 from Specimen Paper 4.
Each answer is followed by a commentary written by a Cambridge examiner, explaining the strengths and
weaknesses of the answers. These examiner comments indicate why marks were awarded and how
answers could be improved

Question 1
Assessment objectives:
W1 communicate simple factual information clearly for everyday purposes
W4 use a range of simple vocabulary and language structures reasonably accurately
The requirement of the revised 2021 question is to fill the blank in a form with single words or short phrases
in response to a given text.
The total number of marks is 5.
Question 2
Assessment objectives:
W2 write simple phrases and sentences on a familiar topic
W4 use a range of simple vocabulary and language structures reasonably accurately
Candidates have to write 80−90 words on a familiar, everyday topic which is identified in the question.
The total number of marks is 12.
Question 3
Assessment objectives:
W3 write simple connected texts describing events, experiences, opinions and hopes and ambitions
W4 use a range of simple vocabulary and language structures reasonably accurately
Candidates have to choose one of the two tasks and write 130−140 words. The task could be an email, a
letter, an article or a blog.
The total number of marks is 28.
Mark schemes
Question 1
For the first point, examiners may accept any answer referring to the nationality of
Gap 1
Huda and reject any answer that does not relate to nationality.
For the second and third points, candidates must note that they are asked about two
Gap 2 and Gap 3 meals. Any type of food that is not considered a meal will be rejected, e.g. fries, a
sandwich.
For the fourth point, candidates must identify the reason for the visit; any other
Gap 4
irrelevant reason will be rejected.
For the fifth point, candidates must mention one service available at the hotel. If the
Gap 5 candidate mentions ‘meal’, it will be rejected as this is already the answer of points 2
and 3.

Examiner comment
The candidate wrote 83 words and addressed all the points mentioned in the question. The use of
vocabulary was varied and good, e.g. ‘delicious food’, and ‘excellent cook’. The candidate also used different
linking words, such as, but and because, accurately which made the writing interesting to read and coherent.
There was also a variation in the use of verb tenses to convey different actions in the present and the future
appropriately.

to complex sentence. The vocabulary was ambitious and served the meaning.
