Introduction

The aim of this booklet is to exemplify standards for those teaching Cambridge IGCSE Arabic 0544, and to
show examples of very good answers for Questions 1, 2 and 3 from Specimen Paper 4.
Each answer is followed by a commentary written by a Cambridge examiner, explaining the strengths and
weaknesses of the answers. These examiner comments indicate why marks were awarded and how
answers could be improved

Paper 4 questions
Question 1
Assessment objectives:
W1 communicate simple factual information clearly for everyday purposes
W4 use a range of simple vocabulary and language structures reasonably accurately
The requirement of the revised 2021 question is to fill the blank in a form with single words or short phrases
in response to a given text.
The total number of marks is 5.

Question 2
Assessment objectives:
W2 write simple phrases and sentences on a familiar topic
W4 use a range of simple vocabulary and language structures reasonably accurately
Candidates have to write 80−90 words on a familiar, everyday topic which is identified in the question.
The total number of marks is 12.

Question 3
Assessment objectives:
W3 write simple connected texts describing events, experiences, opinions and hopes and ambitions
W4 use a range of simple vocabulary and language structures reasonably accurately
Candidates have to choose one of the two tasks and write 130−140 words. The task could be an email, a
letter, an article or a blog.
The total number of marks is 28.

Mark schemes
Question 1

For the first point, examiners may accept any answer referring to the nationality of
Gap 1
Huda and reject any answer that does not relate to nationality.

For the second and third points, candidates must note that they are asked about two
Gap 2 and Gap 3 meals. Any type of food that is not considered a meal will be rejected, e.g. fries, a
sandwich.

For the fourth point, candidates must identify the reason for the visit; any other
Gap 4
irrelevant reason will be rejected.

For the fifth point, candidates must mention one service available at the hotel. If the
Gap 5 candidate mentions ‘meal’, it will be rejected as this is already the answer of points 2
and 3.

To attain the highest marks for this question candidates must:

• Complete all the points required in the question
• Include relevant information expressed in his own words.
• Writes well-structured sentences using appropriate linking words.
• Uses varied and interesting vocabulary.
• Minor mistakes in spelling and grammar will be accepted if they do not distort the meaning or impede
communication.
• Examples of expected linking words; and, or, but, because, then.

Accuracy

The total number of marks allocated to this question is 28 marks, distributed as follows.

10 marks for Task completion spread over six levels.

• To achieve higher levels:
o candidates must complete all tasks
o candidates must give detailed information, opinions/reactions and explanations
o the writing should be focused and wholly relevant.

10 marks for Range spread over six levels.

• To achieve the higher levels candidates must:
o use extended, well-linked sentences frequently
o use a wide range of simple and complex structures listed in the syllabus to produce
sentences of varying length
o use a wide range of vocabulary appropriate to the task(s).

8 marks for Accuracy of language spread over five levels.

• To achieve higher levels:
o candidates’ writing must include accurate spelling and grammar; not necessarily
faultless
o occasional errors in spelling and grammar do not impede communication.

‫‪The candidate wrote 83 words and addressed all the points mentioned in the question. The use of‬‬
‫‪vocabulary was varied and good, e.g. ‘delicious food’, and ‘excellent cook’. The candidate also used different‬‬
‫‪linking words, such as, but and because, accurately which made the writing interesting to read and coherent.‬‬
‫‪There was also a variation in the use of verb tenses to convey different actions in the present and the future‬‬
‫‪appropriately.‬‬

‫ﻧﻤﻮذج اﻹﺟﺎﺑﺔ‬

‫ﻛﻞ ﺳﻨﺔ ﻗﺒﻞ ﺑﺪاﯾﺔ اﻟﻌﻄﻠﺔ اﻟﺼﯿﻔﯿﺔ أﺑﺪأ ﻓﻲ اﻟﺘﻔﻜﯿﺮ ﻓﻲ ﻣﺎذا ﺳﺄﻓﻌﻞ ﺧﻼل اﻟﻌﻄﻠﺔ ﻷﻧﮭﺎ طﻮﯾﻠﺔ وﻣﻤﻠﺔ‪ .‬أردت أن‬
‫أﻋﻤﻞ ﻓﻲ ھﺬه اﻟﻌﻄﻠﺔ ﻟﻜﻲ أﺣﺼﻞ ﻋﻠﻰ ﻣﺎل ﯾﺴﺎﻋﺪﻧﻲ ﻋﻠﻰ ﺷﺮاء دراﺟﺔ ﺟﺪﯾﺪة ﻷذھﺐ ﺑﮭﺎ إﻟﻰ اﻟﻤﺪرﺳﺔ‪.‬‬

‫ﻋﻤﻠﺖ ﻣﻊ ﻋﻤﻲ اﻟﺬي ﯾﻌﻤﻞ طﺒﯿﺒﺎ ً ﺑﯿﻄﺮﯾﺎ ً ﻷﻧﻲ أﺣﺐ اﻟﺤﯿﻮاﻧﺎت ﺟﺪا ً وﻻ أﺣﺐ أن أراھﺎ ﺗﺘﺄﻟﻢ‪ .‬أﺣﺒﺒﺖ اﻟﻌﻤﻞ ﻟﻌﺪة‬
‫أﺳﺒﺎب‪ :‬أوﻻً اﻟﻤﺮﺗﺐ ﻛﺎن ﺟﯿﺪا ً واﺳﺘﻄﻌﺖ أن أدﺧﺮ ﺛﻤﻦ اﻟﺪراﺟﺔ‪ ،‬ﺛﺎﻧﯿﺎ ً اﻟﻤﺴﺘﺸﻔﻰ ﻗﺮﯾﺐ ﻣﻦ اﻟﺒﯿﺖ وﻛﻨﺖ أﻣﺸﻲ‬
‫إﻟﻰ اﻟﻌﻤﻞ ﻛﻞ ﯾﻮم وھﺬا ﺳﺎﻋﺪﻧﻲ ﻓﻲ اﻟﺤﻔﺎظ ﻋﻠﻰ ﻟﯿﺎﻗﺘﻲ اﻟﺒﺪﻧﯿﺔ‪ ،‬ﻛﻤﺎ أن ﻣﻮاﻋﯿﺪ اﻟﻌﻤﻞ ﻛﺎﻧﺖ ﻣﻨﺎﺳﺒﺔ ﻟﻲ‪ ،‬ﻛﻨﺖ‬
‫أﻋﻤﻞ ﺛﻼث أﯾﺎم ﻓﻲ اﻷﺳﺒﻮع ﻓﻘﻂ‪ ،‬ﻓﺎﺳﺘﻄﻌﺖ أن أﺣﻀﺮ ﺗﻤﺮﯾﻦ ﻛﺮة اﻟﻘﺪم واﻟﺨﺮوج ﻣﻊ أﺻﺪﻗﺎﺋﻲ‪.‬‬

‫ﻋﺎدة اﺳﺘﻤﺘﻊ ﺑﺎﻟﺴﻔﺮ إﻟﻰ اﻟﺨﺎرج ﺧﻼل اﻟﻌﻄﻠﺔ ﻷن أﺑﻲ وأﻣﻲ ﯾﺄﺧﺬون إﺟﺎزة ﻣﻦ اﻟﻌﻤﻞ وﻧﺴﺎﻓﺮ إﻟﻰ ﺑﻼد ﺟﺪﯾﺪة‬
‫وﻧﺰور أﻣﺎﻛﻦ طﺒﯿﻌﯿﺔ وأﺛﺮﯾﺔ‪.‬‬

‫ﻓﻲ اﻟﻌﻄﻠﺔ اﻟﻘﺎدﻣﺔ ﺳﺄﻋﻤﻞ ﻣﻊ ﺟﺪي اﻟﺬي ﯾﻤﻠﻚ ﻣﺤﻞ ﻟﺒﯿﻊ اﻟﺰھﻮر ﻷن ﺗﺮﺗﯿﺐ اﻟﺰھﻮر ﻣﻦ ھﻮاﯾﺎﺗﻲ أﯾﻀﺎً‪.‬‬

‫‪The candidate used extended well-linked sentences. There was a variety of structures ranging from simple‬‬
‫‪to complex sentence. The vocabulary was ambitious and served the meaning. Verb tenses were also varied‬‬
‫‪and suitable to the ideas expressed.‬‬

‫‪Generally, spelling and grammar were accurate; not necessarily faultless.‬‬

‫و"أﻣﺎﻛن طﺑﯾﻌﯾﺔ وأﺛرﯾﺔ"‪.‬‬

‫اﻹﻣﻼء ﻓﻲ ﻣﺟﻣﻠﺔ ﺻﺣﯾﺢ‪ .‬ﻗد ﯾﻛون ھﻧﺎك ﺑﻌض اﻷﺧطﺎء ﻓﻲ اﻟﻘواﻋد واﻹﻣﻼء وﻟﻛﻧﮭﺎ ﻻ ﺗﻌوق اﻟﻔﮭم أو ﺗﻐﯾر‬
