Parts of books

 Binding – holds the leaves, protects the book and make its easy to handle.

Spine – which carries the title, the author etc.

End papers – carries useful information such as maps, table etc.

Book cover – the front and the back cover called the book cover.

Joint – is a small groove where the book boards are attached.

Raised band – are raised areas on the spine and mostly decorative.

Tail – is the bottom part of the book.

 Preliminary pages

Flyleaves – blank page next to the papers.

Half title page – preceded the title page and serve as its protection.

Frontispiece – illustrate the subject and precede the title page.

Title page – most important printed page of the book.

Dedication page – bears the name of the person to whom the author dedicates the book.

Preface – introduce the authors and give the objective reason for writing the book.

Introduction – describes the general subject matter.

Table of contents – a list of chapters of a book and page number.

Illustrative materials – carry illustration, maps and tables.

 Auxiliary or reference materials

Appendix – contains materials referred but not explained the text.

Bibliography – list of books which the author used in writing.

Glossary – gives meaning meaning of some technical or foreign words which are explained by the
author.

Index – a list of topics discussed in the text. Arrange alphabetically with page reference.
