TITLE: STUDY OF NETWORK DEVICES
DATE: 02/05/2022

Network Devices
Network devices, or networking hardware, are physical devices that are required
for communication and interaction between hardware on a computer network.

1. Repeater – A repeater operates at the physical layer. Its job is to

regenerate the signal over the same network before the signal becomes
too weak or corrupted so as to extend the length to which the signal can
be transmitted over the same network. An important point to be noted
about repeaters is that they do not amplify the signal. When the signal
becomes weak, they copy the signal bit by bit and regenerate it at the
original strength. It is a 2 port device.

2. Switch – A switch is a multiport bridge with a buffer and a design that

can boost its efficiency (a large number of ports imply less traffic) and
performance. A switch is a data link layer device. The switch can perform
error checking before forwarding data, which makes it very efficient as it
does not forward packets that have errors and forward good packets
selectively to the correct port only. In other words, the switch divides the
collision domain of hosts, but broadcast domain remains the same.
3. Routers – A router is a device like a switch that routes data packets based
on their IP addresses. The router is mainly a Network Layer device.
Routers normally connect LANs and WANs together and have a
dynamically updating routing table based on which they make decisions
on routing the data packets. Router divide broadcast domains of hosts
connected through it.

4. Gateway – A gateway, as the name suggests, is a passage to connect two

networks together that may work upon different networking models. They
basically work as the messenger agents that take data from one system,
interpret it, and transfer it to another system. Gateways are also called
protocol converters and can operate at any network layer. Gateways are
generally more complex than switches or routers. Gateway is also called a
protocol converter.
5. Brouter – It is also known as the bridging router is a device that
combines features of both bridge and router. It can work either at the data
link layer or a network layer. Working as a router, it is capable of routing
packets across networks, and working as the bridge, it is capable of
filtering local area network traffic.

Operating System
An operating system is a software programme required to manage and
operate a computing device like smartphones, tablets, computers,
supercomputers, web servers, cars, network towers, smart watches, etc. It is
the operating system that eliminates the need to know coding language to
interact with computing devices.
Some popular Operating Systems include Linux Operating System, Windows
Operating System, VMS, OS/400, AIX, z/OS, etc.

Functions of OS
Some of the important functions of an operating System are :
● Memory Management
● Processor Management
● Device Management
● File Management
● Security
● Control over system performance
● Job accounting
● Error detecting aids
● Coordination between other software and users

Multitasking Operating System

A multitasking operating system (OS) is one that can work on more than one
task at a time by switching between the tasks very rapidly. The tasks may all
pertain to a single user or to multiple users. A multitasking OS can save the
current state of each user and task so that it does not lose its place when it
comes back to a task to resume its work. This allows the system to switch
smoothly between tasks.

Multiprogramming Operating System

An OS that is capable of running multiple programs on a single processor is
known as a multiprogramming OS. If a program has to wait for an I/O transfer
in a multiprogramming OS, other programs utilize the CPU and other resources
meanwhile.
E.g.: Desktop OS, such as Windows, MacOS, etc. these are modern OS and
incorporate various multiprogramming concepts in their functioning. A user is
able to run multiple jobs on a systems running one (or more) OS at the same
time. Many games have been designed to use a single processor core, for
instance.
Multiuser OS
A multiuser OS enables several users to share processing time on one powerful
central computer through different terminals. The OS achieves this by quickly
switching among different terminals.

Task Manager
The Windows Task Manager is a powerful tool packed with useful information,
from your system’s overall resource usage to detailed statistics about each
process. This guide explains every feature and technical term in the Task
Manager.

The Task Manager includes the following tabs:

● Processes: A list of running applications and background processes on your

system along with CPU, memory, disk, network, GPU, and other resource
usage information.

● Performance: Real-time graphs showing total CPU, memory, disk, network,

and GPU resource usage for your system. You’ll find many other details
here, too, from your computer’s IP address to the model names of your
computer’s CPU and GPU.
● App History: Information about how much CPU and network resources apps
have used for your current user account. This only applies to new Universal
Windows Platform (UWP) apps—in other words, Store apps—and not
traditional Windows desktop apps (Win32 applications.)
● Startup: A list of your startup programs, which are the applications
Windows automatically starts when you sign into your user account. You
can disable startup programs from here, although you can also do that from
Settings > Apps >Startup.
● Users: The user accounts currently signed into your PC, how much resources
they’re using, and what applications they’re running.

● Details: More detailed information about the processes running on your

system. This is basically the traditional “Processes” tab from the Task
Manager on Windows 7.
● Services: Management of system services. This is the same information
you’ll find in services.msc, the Services management console.
