Week 2 – The Scientific Method

Score: 35 points
Due date: Saturday, September 17, 2022
Note: Answer only in bullet form.

1. DEFINE the SCIENTIFIC METHOD in your own words? Maximum of 3

sentences only. (5 pts.)
Testing and experimenting to objectively obtain information.

2. NAME three (3) CHARACTERISTICS of a Scientific Method. (6 pts.)

Answers:
▪ Orderly and Systematic
▪ Control external factors
▪ Empirical Evidence
3. LIST down the seven (7) Scientific Method Sequence; DESCRIBE each method. (14 pts.)
Answers:

▪ State the Problem - Observe something that can lead to a question, and then ask a
question about what you're observing.

▪ Formulate a Hypothesis – outcome of your experiment.

▪ Test the Hypothesis – the outcome must be measurable.

▪ Gather Data - Observe nature, undertake a lab experiment, or use a model.

Scientists choose and combine strategies. They plan and collect data.

▪ Analyze and Interpret the Data - The process of interpreting the data consists of
attempting to provide an explanation for the patterns that were observed.
▪ Draw Conclusion - This implies that you may need to either modify your process
if it was not specific enough or alter your hypothesis.

▪ Communicate Results - Share what you learned from your experiment.

4. IDENTIFY the two (2) Types of OBSERVATION in the Scientific Method.
Describe each type and give an example. (10 pts.)
Answers:

1. Qualitative
Description: Observations provide nonnumerical results.
Example: color, smell, taste, touch or feeling, typology, and shapes.

2. Quantitative
Description: Quantitative observations yield meaningful,
numerical results.
Example: age, weight, height, length, population, size and
other numerical values.
