Activity 9 - Lab Exercise

NOTE: A LABORATORY REPORT WILL BE SEPARATELY SUBMITTED FROM THE LAB ACTIVITY QUESTIONS.
QUESTIONS
1. How effective at cleaning the water is the filter device shown in the YouTube? Be
descriptive.
Water filtration is the process of eliminating undesired impurities from water to make it
cleaner. Physical filtration is one method, in which large particulates are removed from the
water. When precipitation (rain, snow) soaks into the soil during the hydrologic (water)
cycle, water is naturally filtered. As the water trickles deep enough to replace the
groundwater, the layers of vegetation, dirt, sand, and gravel remove physical particles
from the water (which is what we call underground water that supplies wells and springs).
2. Aside from turbidity, enumerate other possible five (5) water quality monitoring
parameters that can be employed in the experiment. Explain the importance of each
parameter.

The pH scale is logarithmic and goes from 0 to 14. For each whole
number increase (i.e. 1 to 2) the hydrogen ion concentration
decreases ten fold and the water becomes less acidic.
