    17. Excavations (Part I)

    What?
     Keep workers and plant separate
     Isolate (RED AREA) the excavation site
     Ensure that operators are competent
     Understand the excavation programme
     Review the excavation design plan
     Understand the Permit to Work

    Why?
     To prevent collapse
     To prevent people from being struck by equipment / plant
     To prevent people / vehicles from falling into excavations
     To protect nearby / adjacent structures or services
     To avoid existing below ground services

    Do Don’t
     Read the Permit to Work and all X Go near unsupported excavations
    associated documents X Enter the excavation ahead of the support
     Wear PPE at all times X Store equipment or materials close to the
     Access the excavation from safe points of excavation
    entry X Remove supports before instructed
     Use certified excavation plant
     Keep vehicles away from excavation
     Report all incidents and near misses
