Pg 2 - Band Handbook 2019

Dear SHS Band Families,

Welcome to the 2019-20 school year in the Shorewood High School (SHS) Band program! This comprehensive
organization is mainly comprised of two independent groups called Symphonic Winds and Wind Ensemble.
The differences between the two groups are the size of the ensemble and the difficulty of the repertoire. There
are four (4) main concerts each year including Rocktoberfest, Winter Concert, Band-O-Rama, and the Spring
Finale Concert. In addition, we offer Pep Band, Jazz Band, Drumline, and more! One important date to put in
your calendar right away, our first pep band performance is this Friday, September 6, at the home football
game!

This school year we are excited to take a trip to New York City in January 2020. We will participate in
educational music clinics and see attractions such as the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island, Broadway, and more!
The sign up deadline is Friday September 13 and trip website is shorewoodbands.org/new-york-city-trip.

The continuation of musical studies often provides students with the teamwork skills needed to prepare for high
school and life after graduation. Becoming a member of a music ensemble also promotes acceptance into a
respected organization at the onset of a new school year, providing a group of supporting friends and a firm
sense of belonging. For freshmen, by joining band you automatically get to know upperclassmen at SHS who
can help you get to know the campus, answer questions, mentor your musicianship, and be your friends!

As members of the SHS Band, students are responsible to make a commitment to the program, be cooperative
with the group, and work hard to maintain the quality of our organization. The attitude and work ethic students
bring to rehearsals will largely affect the positive experience they have in the performance ensemble.

This SHS Band Handbook will give you useful information regarding expectations, policies, routines, grading,
supplies, calendar, dress code, attendance policies, and more. Please read it carefully and refer to it as needed.

Lastly, I communicate primarily via email so please be sure to check your email on a daily basis. I also use
Google Classroom where I post audio links of music we are rehearsing, assignments, or other related
information. If you ever have any questions, please feel free to contact me at anytime!

Wishing you a rewarding and musical year,

Mr. Kujawa

ENSEMBLES
♦ SYMPHONIC WINDS
The Symphonic Winds is the larger concert band designed for high school band students who
desire to perform intermediate repertoire through daily ensemble rehearsals. The year will begin
by rehearsing pep band music to be performed at home football games and Rocktoberfest. As
the weather gets colder, we transition to traditional band music to perform at formal concerts.
We will work on musical concepts such as technique, musicality, music theory, sight-reading,
and other intermediate music-related topics. Private instrument lessons are strongly encouraged.

♦ WIND ENSEMBLE - (audition based)

The Wind Ensemble is the smaller concert band designed for high school band students who
desire to perform advanced repertoire through daily ensemble rehearsals. The year will begin by
rehearsing pep band music to be performed at home football games and Rocktoberfest. As the
weather gets colder, we transition to traditional band music to perform at formal concerts. Top
chair players will have opportunities to perform with the orchestra. We will work on musical
concepts such as technique, musicality, music theory, sight-reading, and other advanced
music-related topics. Private instrument lessons are strongly encouraged.

♦ PEP BAND
Both the Symphonic Winds and Wind Ensemble jointly perform for home SHS football and
basketball games. The full band plays for football games and two smaller pep bands (Red/Grey
Pep Bands) each perform for select home basketball games. Students are required to attend their
assigned games as an extension of the classroom experience. shorewoodbands.org/pep

♦ JAZZ ENSEMBLE - (audition based)

The Jazz Ensemble is a premiere group of high school musicians who are interested in playing
different styles of music including jazz, rock, funk, and latin. Instrumentation includes alto sax,
tenor sax, bari sax, trumpet, trombone, electric guitar, bass guitar, drum set, auxiliary
percussion, and piano. Students must be enrolled in an SHS ensemble (band, choir, orchestra) in
order to be eligible to join the SHS Jazz Program. Rare exceptions are made at Mr. Kujawa’s
discretion.
Rehearsals are once per week, at a time that works for everyone, from November until late
April. The ensemble performs at Discovery World for Swing with Shorewood, New Trier Jazz
Festival in Illinois, WSMA Solo & Ensemble, and the Colectivo Back Room in Milwaukee.

♦ JAZZ COMBO - (audition based)

The Jazz Combo is an extension of the Jazz Ensemble made of 3-6 advanced musicians.
Students must play in both groups. Auditions will take place after the Jazz Ensemble is set.

♦ DRUMLINE
The SHS Drumline is comprised of all SHS percussionists who perform in the Homecoming
parade, athletic events, and have a feature in Rocktoberfest. Occasional lunch rehearsals will be
required leading up to these events. Instruments include marching snare, bass, and quads.

Addition Percussion Only Performances (required)

● Homecoming Parade
○ There is a Homecoming parade during the day on Friday, September 27, 2019. It is
tradition that the drumline performs in this parade. This means pep band drums with
harnesses and marching in step. We’ll learn 1 or 2 cadences for this. The music does not
have to be memorized, you can tape it to your instrument. Outside of class rehearsals may
be required. More information to follow.
● Rocktoberfest Feature & Video
○ During the annual Rocktoberfest, the drumline gets a feature performance and video
opportunity. Last year was a unique STOMP-like performance using only chairs and
drumsticks. This year it was suggested that we consider using Boomwhackers. Outside of
class rehearsals and filming times will be required. More information to follow.

Pg 9 - Band Handbook 2019

CONCERT DRESS

All band students will participate in several formal concerts throughout the year. SHS music students are
required to wear formal black and white concert dress. The following is a description of the appropriate attire:

Men: Black tuxedos with white tuxedo shirts. Students must provide their own white tuxedo shirts, an all black
bow tie, all black dress pants, all black dress black shoes, and all black dress black socks. Tux jackets are
provided by the SBPA. Students are responsible for returning professionally dry cleaned tux jackets. If families
need assistance in providing any part of the required attire, please contact Mr. Kujawa.

Women: Black floor-length dress or black dress pants with a black long-sleeved or 3⁄4 length sleeve top, black
stockings and black dress shoes. No slits, shiny fabric, low/high cut tops or flashy jewelry. Clothing should be
formal and comparable to the tuxedos. View examples at https://sepapparel.com/ladies/concert-dresses.html

Note: this attire is only for the Winter Concert, Band-O-Rama, and Spring Finale Concert.

ATTENDANCE & ABSENCE POLICY

All band members are expected to be present at ALL required band activities, including rehearsals and
performances. EVERY student is an important part of our prepared and balanced performances. Even one
musician absent makes significant differences in the quality of what all of us work so hard to achieve. Students
will receive an SHS Band Calendar for the upcoming year on the first day of school (Pg 14 of this handbook).
Please refer and adhere to the calendar to avoid conflicts.

If a scheduling conflict arises for a required band performance or rehearsal, please complete the
Performance Conflict Form two (2) weeks in advance (including family/athletic conflicts). Extending
circumstances are the exception to the rule and include illness and family emergency.

EXCUSED is defined as an illness, family emergency, or school-sponsored event that has been discussed and
agreed to by the director two weeks prior to the event. The student must complete the conflict-resolution form
if he/she is missing a performance. Students will receive credit for the performance AFTER the make-up
assignment is completed no later than one week after the concert/performance. To make up an excused concert
absence, you will still need to perform all of the music we would have played for Mr. Kujawa during a
scheduled time. Pep band make-ups are to attend another game.

UNEXCUSED is defined as all other events that may prevent you from participating.

YOU ARE GIVEN THE ENTIRE PERFORMANCE CALENDAR ON THE FIRST

DAY OF SCHOOL. IT IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY TO PLAN AHEAD.

**Regarding tardiness, school regulations stipulate that students will have an unexcused absence recorded,
if they are more than 10 minutes late to a class.**

Pg 10 - Band Handbook 2019

INSTRUMENT RENTAL FEE

All percussionists will be charged a school percussion usage fee of $70.00. This fee helps to cover the
costs of maintaining the current classroom percussion instruments, as well as covering some of the costs
from normal usage caused by the day-to-day playing in rehearsals. In addition, SHS owns several large
instruments such as tubas, baritones, bass clarinets, and tenor/baritone saxophones. These instruments
are available for students to rent for an annual maintenance fee of $70.00. Checks should be made out to
the Shorewood School District. Payment due by Friday September 20, 2019.

ROCKTOBERFEST TSHIRT FEE

Each band student will owe about $8.00 to pay for a Rocktoberfest T-shirt. The exact price, along with
an order form will be sent home once we have a quote from the tshirt printing company.

LOCKS & LOCKERS

Band students should consider securing a larger school locker located on the first floor hallway of the
SHS Performing Arts Building through the attendance office at the start of school. These lockers are
designated for the instrumental music students due to the larger locker size and the proximity to the band
room. Students can also be assigned a band locker. Some students prefer to store their instruments
separately in a band locker rather than trying to fit it in a school locker. Band locks & lockers will be
assigned by Mr. Kujawa. You can share a band locker/lock with a trusted friend if you want to.

SOLO AND ENSEMBLE FESTIVAL

Each spring, SHS Band students participate in the WSMA Solo & Ensemble Festival at Homestead HS.
All students are strongly encouraged to participate in this valuable festival in a variety of events
including solos, duets, trios, and/or small chamber ensembles. Students will perform for a judge to get
valuable feedback about their playing. The Jazz Ensemble is required to perform at festival. All students
have a few options to complete their 3rd quarter performance assessment including participating in the
S&E festival, playing for Mr. Kujawa, or playing in front of the class. wsmamusic.org/festivals

BAND COUNCIL

Students who are interested in leadership roles within the band program should see Mr. Kujawa. Roles
include President, Vice President, Secretary, Publicist, and Librarian. The Band Council also can
provide insight to the director such as song requests, program improvements, etc. These leadership
positions look very good on a job or college application. The council meets monthly at a time that works
for all.

Pg 11 - Band Handbook 2019

OTHER MUSIC OPPORTUNITIES

Musical Pit Orchestra is a way for student musicians to get involved with the theater program. The pit
orchestra will be highly involved in the shows and will begin rehearsing about 8 weeks before the show.
Rehearsals may be added as the show draws closer and usually take place in the evenings. Instrumentation
varies for each show. The shows this year are Urinetown and Billy Elliot.

Recorder Club is a Shorewood High School club that is dedicated to being awesome on recorder. Please see
Sydney Miller, Molly Fox-Kincaid, or Henry Heyden for more details in joining. Mr. Kujawa is the advisor.

WSMA High School State Honors Music Project is a great musical and personal experience. It can also help
to set a person’s college application apart from other college applicants as it is nationally recognized as
one of the finest opportunities for young people. Register in November 2019, audition in February 2020,
perform in Madison October 2020 as part of the WI Music Educators Conference. wsmamusic.org/hs-honors.

Milwaukee Youth Symphony Orchestra (MYSO) provides an opportunity to perform with exceptional youth
musicians from around the area. Since 1956, the MYSO has been nurturing, challenging, and inspiring young
minds through music, profoundly changing our community for the better. myso.org/join-myso/auditions.

The UW-Milwaukee Youth Wind Ensemble (UWAY) provides the region’s finest woodwind, brass and
percussion students in grades 8-12 the opportunity to rehearse and perform traditional and contemporary
repertoire with other like-minded musicians. Students are led by artist-faculty from the Peck School of the Arts
at UW-Milwaukee and work closely with other musical members of the university’s vibrant performing arts
community. UWAY participants work directly with music department faculty and staff, furthering their
musicianship by performing in a university setting. uwm.edu/arts/outreach-events/youth-wind-ensemble.

The UW-Milwaukee Youth Jazz Ensemble (UJAY) is an auditioned group comprised of the Greater
Milwaukee Area’s finest high school jazz musicians. Since 1992, students have experienced jazz education in a
professional-style setting, received extra instruction from guest artists/clinicians, and performed in the
University and Milwaukee jazz communities. uwm.edu/arts/outreach-events/youth-jazz-ensemble

Summer Band Mentor Program is a great way for high school band students to give back by teaching small
group lessons to middle school band students. This is a paid position with opportunity for raises each summer.
Pay starts at $10 per session. You lead sectionals to band students in grades 5-9 and then play alongside them in
a concert. For more information, please contact Mr. Kujawa.

Pg 12 - Band Handbook 2019

SHOREWOOD BAND PARENTS ASSOCIATION (SBPA)

As a parent of a student in the Shorewood Band program, you are automatically a member of the
Shorewood Band Parents Association (SBPA), whose purpose it is to support the Shorewood Band
Program. Some examples where volunteers are needed for a variety of tasks including chaperoning for
field trips, making and serving refreshments at band events, and organizing fundraising opportunities.
SBPA general membership meetings are held twice per year, one in the fall and one in the spring. The
organization will contact you with pertinent information. shorewoodbandparentassn@gmail.com

SBPA Student Fund Accounts

When Band students raise money using fundraisers offered during the school year, it goes into
individual student accounts maintained by the Shorewood Band Parents Association’s (SBPA)
Treasurer. These funds are available for Band-sponsored trips purchased by the Band student. Here are
some specifics regarding how these funds will get dispersed:

1. SBPA does not allocate funds unless directed by a parent or guardian. Parents must request that
funds in their student’s account should be used for a particular trip purchase. This should be
done via email to the student’s band Director.
2. If your student leaves the Band program, his/her funds can be transferred to a sibling who is
participating in the Shorewood Band program. Such a request should be done via email to the
SBPA: shorewoodbandparentassn@gmail.com.
3. If your student leaves the Band program, his/her funds can be transferred to another Shorewood
music program for use by your student or a sibling, who is traveling with a Shorewood music
program-sponsored trip, if such a request is sent by the parent or guardian via email to the
SBPA: shorewoodbandparentassn@gmail.com.
4. All requests to transfer funds to another music program or sibling must be sent to SBPA within
three (3) months of the last day the student participated in the Band program.
5. If funds are not transferred to another music program or to a sibling, they will be used to support
the SBPA program.

Please direct any questions about student funds to shorewoodbandparentassn@gmail.com.
