views I would say they have). Joseph Nye......has been a wonderful supporter of the
school, ..and has been engaged with us on many, many occassions.

So it´s a huge pleasure to have all here and I hope you will come to many of our events....I
hope you will engage with the school ...and I would like to welcome Daniel B., the President

What is significant though that J.N is considered so an influential author not only by fellow
I.R. academics but also by policymakers.

It´s claimed now I hope that J. Nye is a remarkable, rigorous academic and certainly well
placed to lead tonight´s discussion in International relations, speaking specifically whether
China will or will not pass the US in 2030. Please, show your appreciation for and give
a very warm Oxford welcome to Joseph S. Nye

J. Ney:

Thank your very much Daniel, and thank you very much indeed. It´s a pleasure to be back at
Oxford and to be here at the Martin school, and I have aimed to keep my remarks brief
enough so to have plenty of time for questions and remarks, interaction with the audience.
The question whether China will pass the US. is.a question which some people think is
already settled............

been one of those rare professors that has moved taking wisdom into the government out of
the government, using it in the classroom back into the government back out, and it gives him
a very rare insight into both American foreign policy and what it measn for American
government. So Joe can I start by just saying a huge welcome, you have been part of this
school since the time it was just and idea in some of our heads and you have been a visiting
profesor in the school since then and we have been hugely grateful to you. So a warm
welcome to Professor Ney.

Thank your very much Ngaire. It is nice to be back at Blavatnik and also to see this
extraordinary building ... I am advertised to say little bit about American foreing policy .and

what I will say it is going to be very brief because I think the most interesting thing will be
