SUMMARY

An internship with Samruddhi for 9 weeks was undertaken in Bangalore between 25-04-2022 and 4-07-2022.

The internship at Samruddhi allowed me to learn aspects of projects and industry while working in different

departments under Naveen Kumar, Proprietor. I was assigned to drafting and site visit under expert guidance.

As well as learning what happens in the office, I learned a lot about what actually happens on the field. As part of

my internship, I was required to complete plumbing drawings, electrical drawings, and structural drawings.

These drawings helped me to understand processes and their working in the field, standard operating procedures,

working method statements, and the works in different phases of the project.

• Slab reinforcement and electrical pipe laying:

I witnessed the practical workmanship of the above-mentioned work through Mr.

Shreesha Rao's comprehensive knowledge of slab reinforcement and electrical pipe
laying. In addition, he was assigned to check that steel ties and proper covers had been
provided before slab concreting was started.

The minimum grade concrete used for structural element is M20 as per IS 456- 2000 (Code of practice for plain
and reinforced concrete) generally in volumetric ration M20 means 1:1.5:3 (cement: sand: coarse aggregate -
metal). M20 means the characteristic strength of concrete at age of 28 days in 20 N/Sq mm.

In tilting drum mixer pouring Fine aggregate - MSand Coarse aggregate – 20 mm,
water proof material with water 12mm

As well as checking the materials that were added to the

concrete mixing procedure, he also assigned me the task to
ensure that the amount of material that is being added is in
accordance with the design mix.

• Contribution to the organization

I was proactive during my entire time at Samruddhi and tried to help and suggest to improve the activities and
workflow at both site and in the office.

As part of my contribution, I conducted research to find the best practices/methods using local materials to
achieve aesthetic purposes just as Laurie Baker used vernacular architecture for economical and eco-friendly
purposes. Working in the architecture group was mostly what I did during my internship. But I got a chance
to explore another field.

During my internship, I had the opportunity to design entire floor plans.

it is located in Bangalore
Bangalore Layout project was designed for G+4.Building consists of a parking lot on the ground floor,
2BHK apartments with a separate entrance for rented prepress, and a staircase with lift shaft.
There is a stunning kitchen on the first floor with high land as per the client's demand, and a living room based
on the concept of living in nature. The entire living room design is designed to resemble a park. This hall is
designed to provide lawn in the entire space and is lined with a hybrid bamboo tree, shrubs, decoration stones,
and pebbles as per the client's demand.
In addition to providing proper interior design in the bedrooms and common bathrooms, the hall is spacious
enough to situate a common toilet. Typical floor plans on the second and third floors provide two bedrooms
with adequate space between rooms and also a bathroom with a walk-in. There is also a living room with a
jacuzzi according to the client's specifications on the fourth floor. In addition, there is a solar panel, a
water tank, and a terrace.

• Key learnings
o Working at Samruddhi, I was exposed to a broader sense of civil engineering how they deal the
situation and gain experience of the site.
o I have improved my understanding of various stages of construction, project management and team
coordination.

o I got in-hand experience in deal with structural drawing and civil works.

o Got the opportunityto interact and learn from experienced professionals who each have a
unique perspective to share.

o I was able to witness and learn from the professionals about work ethics, time management,
adaptability, responsibility and problem-solving skills.

GRADE OF CEMENT: During my internship I got glimpse about the grading of cement.
• The cement grade refers to the cement compressive strength that means how much strength cement can
yield or bear. These cement grades are classified according to the compressive strength of the cement,
tested after 28 days.
The grade of cement is a numerical value to measure its compressive strength. As the cement grade increases, its
strength increases. Selection of a particular cement grade should be done as per the requirements and nature
of the work.
• OPC-33 Grade- It is not widely used and can only be used for low strength works like plastering. It is
conforming to IS 269.

• OPC-43 Grade- It is widely used in wall plastering, non-RCC works, pathways and achieves 43
Megapascals of compression strength in 28 days. It is conforming to IS 8112.

• OPC 53-Grade- It is mostly used in RCC structures, buildings, prestressed concreting, 53 Grade attains
27 Mpa in 7days compared to 23 Mpa by 43-grade cement and achieves a final compression strength of
53 Megapascals in 28days. It is conforming to IS 12269.

SAMRUDDHI 39
NICMAR [PGP - ACM]
Initial Strength:
• The initial strength of 53-grade cement is higher than 33 grade or 43-grade cement. The strength of 53
grade attains 100% strength in 28 days because of early strength gain.
• 43-grade cement attains 70% of strength in 28 days but it continues to gain strength after 28 days. Over
an infinite time 43-grade cement will attain the same ultimate strength as that of 53 grade cements.
• Now 33 grade is obsolete, and 43 grade cement is also getting obsolete. At present 53 grade cement is
available in market in the form OPC and PPC. As heat of hydration of 53 grade OPC cement is high and
occurrence of cracks are more, it is better to opt for blended cements or PPC cement where in addition to
cement pozzolana is added at the factory. In all ready mix concrete blended cement is used ie., the OPC or
PPC cement is blended with fly ash/ silica fumes/ GGBS (grounded granular blast furnace slag).

43-grade cement is used in:

1. Plastering
2. Cladding
3. Brickwork
4. Stone masonry
5. Flooring, pathway etc.
6. Blocks
7. Tiles
8. Asbestos products like sheets and pipes

53-grade cement is used in:

1. Footing
2. Column
3. Beams
4. Slabs
5. High-rise building, Industrial work.
6. A precast concrete item such as paving blocks, tiles, building blocks, Pipes, railway sleepers, pole etc.
7. Prestressed concrete work like bridges, silos etc.
8. Runway, concrete roads, bridges
9. Cold weather concreting, cement grouts, instant plugging etc.

SAMRUDDHI 40
NICMAR [PGP - ACM]
ONE WAY SLAB & TWO-WAY SLAB.

I was able to observe the slab design during my site visit during shuttering, where they provided
both one-way and two-way slabs based on the plans of the building. It is the gap between the two
layers of beam rods that are called spacing. The main rod bends at discontinuous edges at .15L
continuous edges at .2L, and the extra rod bends at .3L.
• L = span in the same direction.
• In one way slab main rod in short span is bended up as stated above and distribution rod laid
straight along the long span in two way slab the rods are bend at both the direction as stated
above. Grade of the steel fe 500 which is available in market is used in these projects.
Yield strength of the steel is 500 N/m2.
• The RCC slabs are designed and executed based on the short span and long span of the slab.
• When the long span of the slab is equal or more than of two times of short span, the slab is
designed as one way slab and if it less than two times of short span, the slab is designed as
two-way slab.
• In one way slab the main reinforcement is placed along the short span and distribution
reinforcement is placed on long span, whereas in two way slabs the reinforcement in short
span and long span are designed based on coefficients in the code reinforcement is provided
in both the directions of equal importance.
• In two-way slabs torsional reinforcement is provided at top and bottom on the four corners of the
slab panel which are continuous for a distance 0.2L.

• CONCLUSION

I have gained valuable experience through my internship with this prestigious firm. Having the
opportunity to work in such a business has broadened my horizons and provided me with a
better understanding of how such businesses operate.

In the firm, I had the opportunity to train, learn from and develop from various professionals for eight
weeks during my training program. Furthermore, I had the opportunity to observe their work pattern,
behavioral characteristics, and problem-solving abilities. Several of these people I have had the
pleasure of working with directly. The training program has enhanced my knowledge of civil
engineering strategies and methods that I learned during my PGDM program and provided me with a
practical experience of them.

At Samruddhi, I gained a great deal of experience and learned a lot. Many opportunities were given
to me to discover my potential on my own. My professional life has been shaped and influenced by
it, as has my personal growth and development.
