Patterns and Models of Education


Reform

Overview:
This reference lists the resources you need to prepare for your course. It also provides
instructions for the activity that will enable you to get to know your professor and peers.

Your professor will share the link that will be used for the week 1 synchronous meeting.

Duration:
Two (2) hours

Pre-week 1 Tasks:
1. Prepare the technology and software requirements for the course.
2. Confirm access to Google Classroom.
3. Complete the introductory activity.

Instructions:
Technology and Software Requirements:

Ensure that you have the following technology and software requirements:

● PC, Mac, or Chromebook


○ Setting up your PC
○ Setting up your Chromebook
● Internet access
○ Connecting to the internet using your PC

○ Connecting to the internet using your Mac
○ Connecting to the internet using your Chromebook
● Web browser
● Email address (Gmail is preferred)
● Social messaging software to be decided on the first meeting (such as Google Hangouts
or Facebook Messenger)
● Google suite (GoogleDocs, GoogleSlides, GoogleSheets)

Access Requirements:

This course utilizes Google Classroom to manage tasks and submissions. Your professor will
send you an invite to join your course Google Classroom. The relevant sections that you will
frequently access are:

● Stream - use the Stream feature to view updates and collaborate with your peers. You can
post questions or start a discussion in this section.
● Classwork - the Classwork section groups your weekly tasks, references, output, and
templates accordingly. This allows you to locate everything you need for this course in
one place.

1. Access your course Google Classroom.


2. Click Classwork.
3. Under Course Overview, click Course Description.
4. Open GED203 | Learner Orientation Guide.
5. Go through all the links provided. Reach out to your professor if there is any reference
that you can’t access.

Introductory Activity:

This activity allows you to get to know your peers and your professor, enabling you to establish
meaningful connections with other members of the class.

1. Access the trading card creation site.


2. Create your version of a trading card by uploading a photo and adding a description. Your
description can be a specific aspect of your life, your expectations from the course, or any
educational reform that you may be currently advocating.

3. Download a copy of your trading card on your computer.
4. Access Google Classroom and go to the Stream tab.
5. Click Share something with your class… to open the new post textbox.
6. Click Add to upload your trading card.
7. Click Post.
8. Go through other entries in Stream and comment on trading cards posted by at least two
of your peers.
