Engine System
Toyota 2NZ-FEThe Toyota 2NZ-FE is a 1.3 l (1,298 cc, 79.21 cu-in) straight-four 4-stroke natural aspirated
gasoline engine from Toyota NZ-family. The 2NZ-FE engine was manufactured on Kamigo Plant (Aichi
Prefecture, Japan) from 1999.
The 2NZ-FE engine features a lightweight aluminum block and aluminum cylinder head with dual overhead
camshafts (DOHC) and four valves per cylinder (16 in total). Compression ratio rating is 10.5:1. It has a 75.0 mm
(2.95 in) cylinder bore and 73.5 mm (2.89 in) piston stroke.
The Toyota 2NZ-FE engine has electronic fuel injection system, VVT-i (Variable Valve Timing with
intelligence) system on the intake side, ETCS-i (Electronic Throttle Control System-intelligent) and DIS-4
ignition system with individual ignition coil for each spark plug .
121 Nm (12.34 kg·m; 89.3 ft·lb) at 4,400 rpm of peak torque. The 2NZ-FE engine was redesigned in 2003 due to
the introduction of Euro IV emissions regulations. The following changes were made to the engine:

The steel connecting rods for the 2NZ-FE engine has caps that are held by plastic region tightening bolts. The
engine is equipped with aluminum alloy pistons, semi-floating type piston pins and low-tension rings (two
compression and single oil control ring).

CYLINDER HEAD
The cylinder head is made of aluminum alloy which gives it good cooling efficiency. The engine has dual
overhead camshafts, that are driven by a roller timing chain which has an 8.0 mm pitch and four valves per
cylinder (16 valves in total). The timing chain is lubricated by engine oil from an oil jet. The engine has a
pentroof type combustion chamber and cross-flow manifolds.
The 2NZ-FE used Variable Valve Timing with intelligence system (VVT-i) on the intake camshaft. Intake valves
are 30.5 mm (1.20 in) in diameter, and the exhaust valves are 25.5 mm (1.00 in). The engine has an intake
duration of 225 degrees and exhaust duration of 216 degrees. The 2NZ engine used special valve shims to adjust
the valve clearance.

Valve clearance adjustment data
Calculate the thickness of new adjusting valve lifter so valve clearance comes within specified values.
R = Thickness of removed valve lifter
N = Thickness of new valve lifter
M = Measured valve clearance
Intake:
N = R + [M – 0.20 mm (0.008 in)]
Exhaust:
N = R + [M – 0.30 mm (0.012 in)]
Valve lifters are available in 35 sizes to range from 5.06 mm (0.1992 in) to 5.74 mm (0.2259 in), in steps of 0.02
mm (0.0008 in).
Example (intake valve):
R = 5.10 mm
M = 0.52 mm
N = 5.10 + (0.52 – 0.20) = 5.42 mm.
