Adams, R.M. (1976). Motive Utilitarianism. The Journal of Philosophy. 73(14), 467-481.
I found some interesting ideas in this article about how Utilitarianism is motivational and action-guiding. Should I need strong
counter-arguments for my work, this would be an ideal reference. The core of his argument seems to follow a demandingness
pathway.

Crimmins, J.E. (2015). Jeremy Bentham. In E. Zalta (Ed.), The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy (Summer 2021 Edition).
Metaphysics Research Lab, Stanford University. https://plato.stanford.edu/entries/bentham/
Since it might be important to know the history of Utilitarianism, this article might be useful for my understanding what the
historical context was for Jeremy Bentham. The article sums up Bentham’s academic career, including the first ideas on Utility
and his thoughts on animals and life in general. Knowing that Bentham’s arguments are barely present in modern Utilitarianism
is also useful for my purposes.

Hare, R.M. (1982). Ethical theory and utilitarianism. In A. Sen, & B. Williams (Eds.), Utilitarianism and beyond (pp. 23-38).
Cambridge, UK: Cambridge University Press.
Amartya and Bernard edited this product together and are two of the most trusted names in philosophy. It is interesting that
this book puts this theory into the perspective that it is not a solution, but a piece of the puzzle in solving moral questions. This
matches with my beliefs and questions that there cannot just be one simple theory that categorizes our moral beliefs, as well as
the thought that emotions and bias contribute to normative theories.

Lazari-Radek, K., & Singer, P. (2017). Utilitarianism: A very short introduction. Oxford, UK: Oxford University Press.
In order to ramp up my knowledge on Utilitarianism, this book is useful to me for discussing the beginning of Utilitarianism, as
well as providing examples of philosophers who argue for and against Utilitarianism. While short and sweet, it holds sufficient
distilled information needed to situate my thesis historically. It shows how Utilitarianism is an example of rigorous theory and
promotes happiness/pleasure/utility for all, which is something I want to include in my work.

Nathanson, S. (n.d.). Act & rule utilitarianism. In The Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy. https://www.iep.utm.edu/util/
This is useful because it focuses specifically on act & rule formulations of Utilitarianism. Rule Utilitarianism sounds similar to
deontological ethics in the sense of following rules and following a moral code. Dr. Nathanson is a specialist in the field, adding
credence to the introduction.

This is the standard for all weekly assignments. Five individual entries, each from a
scholarly text. That means no Wikipedia, non-peer reviewed encyclopedias (such as
Britannica or World Book), or videos. APA Formatting is a substantial part of your
grade, pay attention and do it correctly. If it doesn’t look like these samples,
something’s gone wrong. Remember that if you use journal articles, they should be
