FOREWORD
r) The formal decisions or agreements of the I E C on technical matters, prepared by Technical Committees on rvhich all the
National Committees having a special interest therein are represented, express, as nearly as possible, an international
consensus of opinion on the subjects dealt with.
2) They have the form of recommendations for international use and they ure accepted by the National Contnrittees in that
sens9.
3) I n o r d e r t o p r o m o t e t h i s i n t e r n a t i o n a l u n i f i c a t i o n , t h e I E C e x p r e s s e st h e w i s h t h a t a l l N a t i o n a l C o m m i t t e e s h a v i n g a s
yet no national rules, when preparing such rules, should use the I E C recommendations as the fundamental basis for these
rules in so far as national conditions will permit.
4) The desirability is recognized of extending international agreement on these matters through an endeavour to harmonize
national standardization rules with these recommendations in so far as national conditions will permit. The National
Committees pledge their influence towards that end.
PREFACE
This Recommendation has been prepared by Sub-Committee 2H, Degrees of Protection of Enclosures -
Methods of Cooling, of IEC Technical Committee No. 2, Rotating Machinery.
It forms part of a series of recommendations dealing with rotating electrical machinery, other parts being:
Part l: Rating and Performance(Publication34-l).
Paft 2: on Determinationof Efficiencyof Rotating ElectricalMachinery(Publication34-2).
Recommendations
A first draft was discussedduring the meetings held in Paris in 1963, in Berlin in 1964and in L.ondon in 1966.
As a result of,the latter meeting, a final draft was submitted to the National Committees for approval under the
Six Months' Rule in December 1966.
EXPLANATORY NOTE
When preparing Publication 34-5, Sub-Committee2H took as a basis for its study IEC Publication 144, Degreesof
Protection of Enclosuresfor Low-voltage Switchgear and Controlgear. It was however felt necessaryto make a number of
alterations to the requirements of Publication 144 so that they could be used for rotating machinery.
Deletion of the first characteristicalnumeral 3; protection against ingressof foreign bodies greater than 2.5 mm: this
degreeis not in use for rotating machinery.
The secondcharacteristicnumerals6-7 and 8: ingressof water into the machineshall not be possiblein harmful quantities
(seealso Sub-clause7.3): as water cannot be preventedfrom entering rotating machinery, it was necessaryto alter the
wording and to draft acceptanceconditions allowing for an ingressof water which should not be harmful.
A new degree of protection was added: Weather-protectedmachinery: this protection, frequently used for rotating
machinery, is designatedby a letter, in order to retain the sequenceof numerals of Publication 144.
Hence the requirement referring to the mountingplane, with the condition that the machineshall be completely immersed.

l. Scope
i) protection of persons against contact with live or moving parts inside the enclosure and
protection of machinesagainst ingress of solid foreign bodies;
Neither does it cover protection against other unusual serviceconditions such as moisture, corrosive
vapours, fungus or vermin.
The tests are type tests for enclosure. They shall be carried out on standard products or models of
them. Where this is not feasible, the test should be carried out in accordance with an asreement
between manufacturer and user.
Tests shall be made on a new machine, ready to run, provided with all parts and mounted as
specifiedby the manufacturer.
2. Designation
2.1 The designation used for the degree of protection consists of the letters IP followed by two
characteristic numerals signifying conformity with the conditions stated in the tables of Clauses 3
and 4 respectively.
This may be followed by a letter indicating whether the protection against harmful ingress of
water was tested with'the machine not running (letter S) or the machine in operation (letter M).
The absenceof any letter means that the protection was tested in both cases, machine running and
not running *.
* The meaningof letter W, which may be part of designation,is given in Clause4, Note 2.

2.1.1 The first chqracteristic numeral designatesthe degree of protection of persons against contact with
live or moving parts inside the enclosure and of machines against ingress of solid foreign bodies.
Note. - A single characteristicnumeral is used to designatethe two degreesof protection mentioned above; it is
understoodthat protection againstingressof solid foreign bodies implies a certain amount of protection of
personsagainstcontact with live or moving parts inside the enclosureand vice versa.
2.1.2 The second characteristic numeral designates the degrees of protection against harmful ingress of
water.
Note. - Degreesof protection definedby IEC Publication 144,Degreesof Protection of Enclosuresfor Low-voltage
Switchgear and Controlgear, were as far as possible taken into account.
Ffowever, somedegreesof the above-mentionedpublication could not be retainedas they were not applicable
to generalpurpose rotating machinery:
First characteristicnumeral 3: Protection againstsolid bodies greaterthan 2.5 mm.
First characteristicnumeral 6:
Completeprotection againstingressof dust.
Detailsof discrepancies
betweenthe presentRecommendation and Publication144aregivenin the explanatory
note on page7.
2.2 It is recommended that the characteristic letters and numerals be marked on the machine preferably
on the nameplate, or, if this is not practicable, on the enclosure.
2.3 When all parts of a machine have not the same degreeof protection, the designation of the lowest
degreeshall be shown first, followed if applicable by the other designationwith referenceto the part
to which it applies.
3. Protection of persons against contact with live or moving parts inside the enclosureand protection of
machines against ingress of solid foreign bodies
Machine protected against Protection against contact by finger with live or 6.1

1 In the caseof machinescooled by meansof an external fan, the fan shall be so protected as to prevent contact
of the bladesor spokesof the fan with the standardtest finger. However, at the outlet of the fan, the test finger
is not insertedpast the 50 mm diameterguard (seeFigure 1, page28).
2 The degreeof protection against dust definedby this Recommendationis a generalone. When the nature of
the dust (dimensionsof particles, their nature, for instancefibrous particles)is specified, test conditionb should
be determined by agreementbetween manufacturer and customer.
Machine protected against Dripping water (vertically falling drops) shall have 7.1.1
dripping water no harmful effect.

water.iets from any direction shall have no harmful effect.
't.1.6
Machine protected against Water from heavy seas shall not enter the nrachine
conditions on ships' deck in a harmful quantity.
1 If national standards recognize values differing from those above (for degrees 2 and 3), the designation should
then show clearly this deviation, for instance by adding the letter X between the second characteristic numeral
and the letter S or M respectively (see Sub-clause 2.1).
2 A machine is weather protected when its design reduces the ingress of rain, snow and airborne particles, under
This degree of protection is designated by the letter W (placed between IP and the numerals).

Note.- The above list comprisesthe most frequently used degreesof protection, on the international level, in
accordancewith the descriptiongiven in Clauses3 and 4. It may be alteredor completedfor specialneeds,
or according to the necessitiesof national standards.
6. Tests to check protection of persons against contact with live or moving parts inside the enclosureand
protection of machines against ingress of solid foreign bodies
First
characteristic Test conditions
numeral
No test is required.
The test is made with a sphereof 52.5 mm diameter applied againstthe enclosurewith a force
of 50 N.
The test is deemedsatisfactoryif the spheredoes not enter the enclosureand cannot touch
live or moving parts inside the enclosure.
a) Live parts
The test is made using a metallic contact finger such as the one shown in Figure l,
connectedby an incandescentlamp to one pole of a supply of at least 40 V, the other pole
of the supply being connectedto the parts intended to be live in normal service, electriially
connacted together during the test. The rated voltage of the lamp is equal to that of the
source.
The protection is deemedsatisfactoryif the lamp does not light when an attempt is made to
touch the bare live parts or insufficientlyinsulatedparts, with the test finger placedin every
possibleposition and pushed without undue force.
-19-
First
characteristic Test conditions
numeral
b) Moving parts *
Except for shaftsand similar smooth parts, the test finger shall not touch internal moving
parts when the machineis rotating. For that test, the rotor is slowly rotated by hand. In
addition, the enclosuremust not admit a sphereof 12.5mm diameter.
The test should be madeusing the equipmentshown in Figure 2,page 29, consistingof a closed
test chamber in which talcum powder is maintained in suspensionby an air current. The
talcum powder usedis to passa square-meshed sievewhosenomrnal wire diameteris 50 irm
and the nominal width betweenwires is 75 pm. The amount of talcum powder to be used
is 2 kg per cubic metre of the test chamber. The equipment under test is hung inside the
chamber and its enclosureis connected to a vacuum pump which maintains inside the
enclosurea differential pressureequivalentto not more than a head of 200 mm water. The
test is stoppedat the end of 2 h if the volume of the air drawn in during this period is from
80 to 120times the volume of air in the enclosureunder test.
i
If, with the vacuumequivalentto a head of 200 mm water, it is not possibleto draw in 80 times
the volume of air indicated above, the test shall be continued until that value is attained
or until 8 h have passed, whichever occurs first.
Dust in harmful amount shall not be depositedon the insulating paths betweenlive parts or
betweenlive parts and earth.
The test is carried out only on machinesof shaft height up to 132mm (seeIEC Publication 72-1,
Dimensions and Output Ratings of Electrical Machines, Part l: Foot-mounted Electrical
Machineswith Shaft Heights between56 and 315 mm (251"and 12t/2in). For machinesof
shaft height over 132 mm, the result of the test carried out on a machine of comparable
design, but of lower shaft height, is consideredsufficient.
* SeeNote I of Clause3.
7 . 1 Test conditions
For degreesof protection 1,2,3 and 4,a study of drawing is generallysufficient. In caseof doubt,
the test is carried out in accordancewith the following conditions (1 to 4).
-2r-
For degreesof protection 5, 6 and 7, the test is carried out in accordance with the following
conditions (5 to 7).
For degrees8 and W, the conditions for acceptanceand, if necessary, for test should be subject
to an agreement between manufacturer and user.
All the tests are made with fresh water, if not otherwise indicated.
Test equipments are described as examples in the Appendix. Other types of test equipment
which produce drops having approximately the same size, the same distribution, the same velocity
and direction may be used by agreementbetween manufacturer and user.
During the test, the moisture contained inside the enclosure may be partly condensed. The
dqw which may thus be deposited should not be mistaken for an ingress of water.
Second
characteristic Test conditions
numeral
The test is made by means of the equipment shown in Figure 3, page 30, using water, and
adjusted so that the dischargecorrespondsto 3 mm of water per minute.
The machineunder test is placed in its normal operating position under the dripping equipment,
the base of which must be larger than that of the machine under test.
The test is made by meansof the equipment shown in Figure 3, adjustedso that the discharge
is 3 mm of water per minute.
The machine under test is tilted up to an angle of 15' with respectto its normal operating
position, successivelyin two planes at right angles.
The test is made by spraying the machine by means of an equipment such that the streamsof
water fall on the machine from various directions, the angle of which may reach up to 60"
from the vertical. The distance from the holes to the machine is approximately I m. The
water pressureis approximately 8 x 104N/m' (0.8 kgf/cmz); the water flow is smaller than
9 litres per minute.
The test is made in the same way as for degree of protection 3, except that the machine is
splashed from every direction.
The test conditions and duration are the sameas for degree3.
The support for the machine under test shall be grid-shapedin order to avoid acting as a baffie.
The test is made by applying a stream of water from a nozzle of 12.5 mm inside diameter on
the machine in all directions, at a pressureof 3 x 104N/m'(0.3 kgf/cmz).
The nozde should be held at a distancp of 3 m away from the machine under test.
The duration of the test should be sufficient for splashingthe machine from all directions, but
not less than 10 min.
Second
characteristic Test conditions
numeral
The test is made by applying a streamof water from a nozzleof 12.5 mm inside diameteron
the machine in all directions at a pressureof 105N/m. (1 kgf/cmz).
The nozzle should be held at a distance 3 m away from the machine under test.
The duration of the test should be sufficientfor splashingthe machine from all directions,
but not less than 10 min.
The test is madeby completelyimmersingthe machinein water so that the head of water above
the mounting plane of the machine is I m and the upper part of the machine is at least
15 cm below the surface of water.
Notes /. - The numeral values shown in the table for water pressure, water flow and test duration. as well as for
nozzle dimensions, were stated after a careful study.
It should be noted that the water flow correspondsto an area of projection, on a plane parallel to the
shaft,of I m2; this covers most machines. When the projection area of a machine is greater than I mz,
the water flow and duration of test are sufficient,if all critical areas such as joints, packings, bearings
are tested.
2. - The measurementof the water pressuremay be replacedby that of the height to which the spray of the
nozzle freely rises:
The distanceof the nozzleto the machineunder test,for degrees5 and 6, wasset to 3 m for practicalreasons;
it may be reducedin order to test the machinefrom every direction.
Tesis shall be made on machines not running for all degreesof protection. They may be made on
running machines for degrees4 to 6.
25-
7.3 Acceptanceconditions
After the test in accordancewith Sub-clause7.1 has beencarried out, the machineis subjected
to the followins tests:
7.3.1 Thc amount of water which has enteredthe machine shall not be capable of interfering rvith its
satisfactory operation; the windings and live parts shall not be wet and no accumulationoi water
which could reach them shall occur inside the enclosure.
It is howeverpermissiblefor the bladcs of fans inside rotating machi nesto be w et; al so l eakageal ong
the shaft is allowable if provision is made for drainage of this water.
7.3.2 a) In the caseof a test on a mechine not running, the machine shall be operated under no-lozrd
conditions, under rated voitage for 15 min, then subrnittedto a high-r,oltage.,
test, the test voltagc
being 50 % of the test voltage for a new machine(but not lessthan 125/" of the rateCvoltage).
b) In the case of a test on a running machine, only the high-voltage test is made, in accorduncc
with Sub-clause7.3.2 a).

APPENDIX
The equipment shown in Figure 4, page 31, is that describedin IE C P ubl i cati on144;i t consi sts
of a tube formed into a semi-circle,the radius of which is as small a s p o s s i b l et a k i n g i n t o a c c o u n t
the dimensions of the machine under test.
When the machine is tested according to second numeral 3, holes are drilled in the tube trp to
an angle of 60o from vertical. The tube is kept stationary in the vertical plane during the tcst; but
the turn-table is slowly rotated around its vertical axis.
When the machine is testedaccording to secondnumeral 4, holes are drilled in the tube up to an
angle of 90ofrom vertical. The tube is oscillatedin both directionswith an angle 180ofrom vertical,
the duration of a singleoscillationbeing 4 s. The machineis not moved. The support for the machinc
under test shall be grid-shaped,to avoid acting as a baffle.
2. Spray-nozzleequipment
The test is carried out by splashingthe machine by means of the spray-nozzleshown in Figure 5,
page 32, held in the hand.
In the case of the second characteristicnumeral 3, the spray-nozzleis equipped with a shield
provided with a counterweight,so adjustedas to stop the streamsof water, which would lall under an
angle greater than 60", from the vertical.
In the caseof testing for the secondcharacteristicnumeral 4, the moving shieldis removed.
The number of holes in the spray-nozzleis l2l, the diameter of each being 0.5 mm. They are
spreadevenly over the front part of the spray-nozzle. (See Figure 5.)
The test consistsin splashingthe machine from every direction, either with thc moving shield
fitted (degreeIP.3) or withor.rtit (degreeIP.4).
