INDIVIDUAL ACTIVITY
Listen to the songs Anak by Freddie Aguilar and Bohemian Rhapsody by Queen. Then, write down the lyrics that fall
in each of the five parts of the plot pyramid namely: exposition, rising action, climax, falling action, and resolution.
PERSONAL NOTES:
The first song, Freddie Aguilar’s “Anak”, follows a linear structure of storytelling, akin to a child’s growth.
Nothing much was needed to be arranged, so, I have only adjusted which stanzas suits the better on the story
structure. However, the 2nd example was a bit different, could be because of its loose context as to what it is
about, and its capability to be interpreted in different ways.
I believe that the structure of the song, Bohemian Rhapsody is arranged by starting on the resolution –
where the character contemplates his own predicament, with a similar tone on the song’s end lines; And this
contemplation is followed by the recollections of the singer’s memories that concludes him into making such
answer to his life. In thinking so, I have placed the first 2 stanzas on the Resolution part of the story structure. I
chose the lyrics on the Exposition part because I think it best explains what is happening with the character. The
first lines were really vague without further context from the proceeding stanzas. Also, the lines that I placed in
the Exposition have a stark contrast in tone than the other parts, where the rest of the lyrics seems to be an
introspection of a character’s mind.
If I describe the story structure of Bohemian Rhapsody in this way, it would be: The Exposition laments
the character’s recent sin that he did to his mother, but this was followed through by the rising action, where his
confession only led to him hurting her mother, it details his intentions to leave away. This feeling was further
exacerbated on the Climax by the character’s guilt and shame manifesting like some devil that was placed by
Beelzebub, as he stated through the song. We can clearly see here his state of mind at war. But only though
accepting this guilt he moves past through these troubling thoughts. Here in the Falling action, he now embodies
his decision to acknowledge his shortcomings and moves on. Lastly, the Resolution reiterates this acceptance,
by opening his eyes, and like the breeze blowing freely, this dark past in his life won’t affect him anymore.
