Direction: Write an argumentative essay on the similarities and differences of Standard English and World
Englishes. It should be not less than 250 words.

- World English refers to the English language as a lingua franca used in business, trade, diplomacy and
other spheres of global activity, while World Englishes refers to the different varieties of English and
English-based creoles developed in different regions of the world. Those who instruct corporate
communication frequently notice how Standard English gradually transforms. Like other languages,
English also undergoes linguistic change as a result of interactions with other tongues and a number
of other recognized processes, such as compounding, prefix addition, functional shift, coinage, and so
forth. As the third millennium gets underway, new factors are coming together to have an impact on
Standard English. These include the fact that American workplaces are becoming more richly
intercultural, that immigrants to the country are becoming more fluent in English, and that English is
being used more and more in global business. My viewpoint is that of a native English-speaking Anglo-
American throughout these comments. Different but related perspectives will be held by speakers of
other Englishes. It is common knowledge that using proper standard English will minimize issues. But
what exactly is Standard English, and where does it fit in the increasingly global contexts of corporate
communication instruction? These questions trouble us in part because business people either
approve of others' use of English or disparage it depending on their view of what English is and what
it's supposed to be used for. How, as future educator, do we make our peace with the multiple,
competing standards and values affecting what is acceptable English Most American businesspeople
claim that they demand a high level of proficiency in Standard English from those who work for them.
These businesspeople regard it as a straightforward problem.
