Some thoughts about China

KR

Today China has emerged as a Super Power on the growing trajectory; which means, in a few
years’ time, it could be the strongest and most powerful country in the world; in terms of
Economic Power and political power and Military Power. It has achieved this status through a
socio-political ideology which is different from the rest of the world.

About a couple of hundred years ago, it was a country of huge populations with a limited
natural resources; because of large population, there was food scarcity; Yangtze river with its
frequent uncontrolled flooding causing destruction of people and agriculture, was called the
“sorry of China”. Budhism and other local versions of theosophy was in practice. The economy
was very weak and not much manufacturing was happening.

When Communism came in as the political philosophy, (Mao Tse Dong) the Government
became all-controlling; many new drastic policies were brought in; people’s freedoms were
severely curtailed; practice of religion was banned. All power was concentrated in the hands of
the Leader (Chairman) of the Communist Party. All the military, government executive and
judicial(?) powers were vested with the Chairman. Population control was seen as the
immediate need and law was made to allow only one child per family. To solve the food scarcity
problem, Food policies were subtly changed and people were encouraged to explore outside
the traditional food sources and they started eating exotic and non-traditional meats such as all
wild animals, rodents, insects, bats1 and reptiles as well.

The impact of Communism is that, individual-freedom was severely curtailed. People in the
rural and deep-rural areas were denied benefits of better life available in the urban areas.
Communications and Information was totally controlled by the State. So, it is not known to
what extent the rural populations have made sacrifices and suffered. However, it is left to our
conjecture that they were not too happy. But under Mao’s communism, after a few decades,
the country appeared on the developing track. It certainly cannot be called a ‘Failed State’ as
feared or as happened elsewhere in the world. In mid 80’s and 90’s, China has actually crossed
the ‘developing nation’ status and reached a higher plane in terms of Economy and Industry.
One-family-one-child policy has significantly arrested the population growth rate and
noticeable increase in standard of living became visible. All round growth in Education, Science
and Technology and Industry, manufacturing, military were seen. Mao’s Communism has
served its purpose to bring the country to a higher level and put it in the path to become a
world super power. One deficiency of this political philosophy was that it has no value for an
individual’s intellect or contribution or any democratic values. China was in a constant state of

war, in the sense, it has a huge expansionist-agenda; they want to grab resources from the rest
of the world which includes land, oil and minerals. No respect of copyright law and IPR and
patent-law. All is fair in war.

What scares the rest of the world about China ?

The combination of Political Ideology (Communism), Economic Power and Military Power and
Ruthless desire to grab natural resources of the world such as land, oil, water and minerals.
Mao’s Communism has banned practice of Religion. So generations of youngsters who grew up
with nothing but Maoism know nothing about religion or the compassion that every religion
teaches.
