PATERNAL SIDE

Domingo Lamco - is the paternal ascendant of the Rizal's. He is the great great grandfather of
our National hero Dr. Jose Rizal. He is a full-blooded Chinese who lived in Amoy, China.
- married to a Chinese half breed named Ines dela Rosa
- they had a son born in 1731 named Francisco Mercado

(Lamco changed the family surname to mercado which means " market" in Spanish to signify
their merchant roots.)

Francisco Mercado - he is the great grandfather of Rizal.


- Married to Chinese- Filipino mestiza Bernarda Monica in 1771. He was elected as the
governadorcillo of Biñan around 1873.
- They have 5 children namely: Clemente, Benito, Tomas, Evarista and Juan Mercado.

Juan Mercado - he is the grandfather of Rizal.


- he married Cirilia Alejandro, a Chinese- Filipino mestiza
- like his father he was a governadorcillo of Binan in 1808, 1813 and 1823.
- they had 13 children namely: Petrona, Potenciana, Gabino, Tomas, Gregorio, Cornelia, Gabriel,
Fausta, Leoncio, Casimiro, Juliana, Basilisa, And Francisco Engracio Mercado Rizal.

Francisco Engracio Mercado Rizal - is one of the sons of Juan mercado & Cirilia Alejandro.
- he is the father or Jose Rizal
- he married Teodora Alonzo Realonda de Quintos, a daughter of one of manila's most
distinguished families in 1848.
- he became a tenant of the Dominican owned hacienda
- he is a hardworking and an independent minded person
- a hardy and independent-minded man, who talked less and worked more and was strong in
body and valiant in spirit.
- Jose affectionately called him "a model of fathers"

(Francisco Engracio Mercado added "Rizal" to the family surname in compliance with Governor
Claveria's decree order in Filipinos to adopt spanish surnames.)
