Computer Network Setup

I. Main Factors in Computer Network Setup
A. Kinds of Network Setup
1. Client-Server
2. Peer-to-Peer (P2P)
B. Hardware Requirements
i. Processor – Also known as the Central Processing Unit (CPU), is the logic
circuitry that responds and processes the basic instructions that drive a
computer. Its four (4) primary functions are fetch, decode, execute, and
writeback.

ii. Memory – Computer memory is any physical device capable of storing

information temporarily or permanently.
1. This serves as the working area of the processor:
a. where input information is stored prior to processing after acquisition
from the input device
b. where the program code is stored as instructions for processing
c. where output information is kept after completing the calculations before
giving it to the output device

iii. Motherboard – Also known as the System Board, is the main produced circuit
board (PCB) in a computer. The motherboard is a computer’s central
communications backbone connectivity point, through which all components,
equipment, and external peripherals connect.
1. Connects the different computer components together:
a. CPU
b. Memory
c. I/O devices
2. Selection considerations:
a. Speed of the system bus
b. Number of I/O interfaces

iv. Hard Disk Drives (HDD) - A computer hard disk drive (HDD) is the
mechanism that controls the positioning, reading, and writing of the hard disk,
which furnishes data storage.

1. SCSI – Small Computer System Interface

• It allows for expensive but high-performance drives.
• Drive controller is separate from the drive.
2. IDE – Integrated Device Electronics
• These allow for an inexpensive hard drive.
• Drive controller is integrated with the drive itself.
3. SATA - Serial Advanced Technology Attachment

C. Software Requirements
i. Network Operating System (NOS) – This is an operating system with
extension programs that is provisioned for network connectivity.
