Secants, Tangents, Segments and Sector of a Circle

Concept Notes:
A line which touches a circle at exactly one point is called a tangent line and the
point where it touches the circle is called the point of tangency.

Thus in figure 3, SB is a tangent of the circle at C., which is called a point of tangency.
Two tangent circles are tangent internally if they are on the same side of the tangent
line. Two tangent circles are tangent externally if they are on opposite sides of the
tangent line.

A line which intersects the circle at

two distinct points is called a secant line
´ is a secant line to the circle, M
( usually referred to as a secant ). In Figure 2, SB
and I are called the points of intersection of the line SB and the circle with center
A.
A. Looking for me? Identify all the secants and name their external secant
segments in the figure below.

B. Draw me! Illustrate each of the following. Use a compass or a coin to draw the
circle and a straight edge to draw the lines and line segments. Label accordingly.
For sectors and segments of the circle, shade the appropriate area.
1. Circle A with radius AE and diameter EC.
2. Triangle XYZ inscribed in circle O with radii OX, OY and OZ.
3. Secants MN and BE through circle T at points M and N, and B and E,
respectively, that intersect at exterior point D, where N is between M and D, and
E is between B and D.
4. Sector AOB of circle O.
5. Tangent circles, circle B and circle F, touching at point S, where F is
between B and S, and where circle F passes through point B.

C. Multiple Choice
Directions: Choose the letter of the correct answer. Write your answer on a
separate paper.
1. What do you call the portion of a circle enclosed by two radii and an arc?
