In the future, there will be a higher proportion of older people than young people in

many countries. Is it positive or negative development?

In recent years, humans might prolong our lives with the aid of modern healthcare
system as a result of which the proportion of older people is much higher than that
of young people. From my perspective, I think this development has bad
consequences and undesirable disparities in some parts of the world.

On the one hand, in most populous countries such as China, India, ageing
population also has many positive aspects when it solves the lacking of land for
housing, overloading community services. That’s why the goverments are pushing
their family planning for all citizens. Besides, for Japan and some EU nations
where the elderly account for up to 30 percent, they will step up education quality
to motivate couples to have children.

However, I believe the benefits which are mentioned from the previous paragraph
are eclipsed by more immediate threats to the economic social development. First
off, a rapid increase in the percentage of old folks will damage the national
workforce. Without a doubt, they are not as physically or mentally strong as
younger people, most can no longer work to dedicate to community. Due to the
insufficient number of young people to replace the aging population in terms of
employment, the productivity will be reduced, hindering economic growth. When
people passed the age of 65, body organs were gradually depleted i.e their
performance was backward compared to the next generation. The most obvious
evidence is that in collar-work, companies tend to recruit young team in lieu of the
elderly even if they had long-time experience. Secondly, the high rate of older
people means the government has to pay huge pensions and insurance for them
after the expiration of the term of employment. This causes significant reduction in
the state budget. Pouring money into the healthcare system is also a big problem as
the nation is unable to allocate funding to other sectors like national defense,
education, ect.

In summary, due to the effects of the disparity in the ratio of older and younger
generations, I believe that some countries must take measures and plans to limit
this development.
