Chapter 1: Migrating to Ansys Fluent 2022 R2
The purpose of the Ansys Fluent Migration Manual is to help you transition from the previous version
for the meshing mode and solution mode of Ansys Fluent. Read through the entire document to under-
stand the changes that have taken place. The information is enclosed in the following chapters:
If you are upgrading across several releases, you may find it helpful to consult the Migration Manuals
for the intervening releases as well. You can find these in the Ansys Help on the customer site, by se-
lecting the appropriate release from the drop-down menu on the Home page.
When you write journals using this release, then you should add the text command /file/set-tui-
version "22.2" at the top of the file. This text command will help when you run the journal in a
future release, as it will hide any new text user interface (TUI) prompts that have been added and will
restore any prompts that have been removed. It is intended to help with backwards compatibility with
future releases (up to two full releases after the release the journal file was created in/for).
For information about past, present, and future operating system and platform support, see the Platform
Support section of the Ansys Website.
Note that beta features have not been fully tested and validated. ANSYS, Inc. makes no commitment
to resolve defects reported against these prototype features. Changes in the solution behavior are
sometimes expected and are not captured in this document. However, if there are solution differences
between beta features and the Release 2022 R2 standard Fluent features that concern you, contact
technical support for assistance. Your feedback is appreciated and will help us improve the overall
quality of the product.

Chapter 2: Fluent Release Notes
The following sections contain release information for Ansys Fluent 2022 R2.
2.1. Supported Platforms for Ansys Fluent 2022 R2
2.2. New Features in Ansys Fluent 2022 R2
2.3. Updates Affecting Ansys Fluent 2022 R2 Code Behavior
2.4. Features To Be Removed in a Future Release
Backwards Compatibility: Ansys Fluent 2022 R2 can generally read case files and data files from all
past Fluent releases. Solver and model settings from previous case files are typically respected. However,
in some cases due to defect fixes and core improvements to improve robustness and/or performance,
convergence behavior and/or results obtained may be different. Such release-to-release changes are
documented in the Fluent Migration Manual, along with instructions to recover the previous behavior
when possible.
General Notes
• In addition to the existing, separate, mesh quality and diagnostic tools, you can now access
many of the same tools and more using the new Mesh category in the ribbon. The ribbon lets
you easily perform checking and reporting on mesh statistics and diagnostics, in addition to
access to the new Diagnostics Tools dialog box. See Performing Meshing Diagnostics for details.
• Searching for and displaying items in some selection lists has been enhanced in Fluent Meshing
to support filtering and the use of wildcards. This enhancement is available in some list selection
controls in various dialog boxes such as the Display Grid dialog box, and some zone selection
lists for non-object-based dialog boxes.

Fluent
The filter text entry box allows you to search and organize a list using a text string. The text
string can include wildcards and regular expressions, such as *, ?, [], Boolean NOT (^), Boolean
AND (&), as well as Boolean OR (|), which allow you to perform pattern matching. For example,
searching *let* finds surfaces such as inlets and outlets, including those with longer names,
such as "upper-inlet-5". If you have walls separated by a number, you can search example-
wall-?-23, which would show example-wall-1-23, example-wall-2-23, and so on.
• General Improvements
– Most tasks that support object-based and/or zone-based selection now support label-based
selection where applicable.
– The workflow now supports multi-zone meshing when specified in the Describe Geometry
task, resulting in the addition of two multi-zone related tasks. See Describing the Geometry,
Adding Multizone Controls and Generating the Multizone Mesh for details.
Related changes to the Manage Zones task lets you insert the task prior to generating the
volume mesh so that you can perform zonal operations such as separation, cylindrical
splitting, and edge extraction. See Managing Zones for details.
– The workflow now supports creating non-conformal interfaces between objects when spe-
cified in the Describe Geometry task. See Describing the Geometry for details.
– The Choose Mesh Control Options task now allows you to more easily specify wrap and
target size control files when reading existing size control files. See Choosing Mesh Control
Options for details.
– You can now more selectively update meshing objects in the Import CAD and Part Man-
agement task, increasing the speed and effectiveness of updating the task, especially for
complex geometries with numerous meshing objects. See Working with the Meshing Model
Tree for details.
You can now apply a sizing method to the gap coverings you define in the Create Gap
Cover task. See Creating Gap Covers for details.
– You can now add boundary layer controls to any newly appended replacement parts through
the Choose Part Replacement task. See Choosing Part Replacement Options for details.
– You can now create patches around any problematic contact areas using the Create Contact
Patch task when you want to avoid sharp angle meshing issues in and around contact areas
(such as between tires and the ground). See Creating Contact Patches for details.
– The Create Porous Regions task now lets you define non-rectangular porous region(s)
based on a selected object, label, or zone. See Creating Porous Regions for details.

hedral cells, and/or when the smoothing zones contain deforming conformal periodic
boundaries. (Smoothing Methods)
• When defining a deforming boundary zone as part of a dynamic mesh simulation, it is now
possible to specify that the mesh motion is included in the boundary conditions. (Deforming
Motion)
• When using the unified remeshing method for a dynamic mesh simulation, the prism controls
now provide additional offset types that allow the wedge cell layers to be based on a specified
aspect ratio or smooth transition rate, rather than just a uniform height. (Prism Controls)
• For the mass-flow inlet boundary, the default value for the Direction Specification Method
has changed from Direction Vector to Normal to Boundary.

New Features in Ansys Fluent 2022 R2
Materials
• You can use expressions to define orthotropic thermal conductivity. Refer to Orthotropic
Thermal Conductivity for additional information.
• A graphical user interface (GUI) has been added for the NIST real gas model, and the text user
interface (TUI) has been consolidated for other density methods. Existing cases with the NIST
model are automatically migrated to the new workflow upon reading a case file. However, the
legacy TUI from previous releases remains available for backwards compatibility. (The NIST
Real Gas Models)
• The Granta MDS materials database in Fluent has been updated to the latest version by Granta,
which now also includes fluid materials such as mixtures of ethylene-glycol or propylene-glycol
with water at various ratios.
Heat Transfer/Radiation
• For transient conjugate heat transfer problems, you can now use the moving average option
as present in Data Sampling for Time Statistics to compute time averaged heat flow on the
fluid side. Upon enabling this option, Fluent automatically creates the required unsteady
datasets for each coupled wall. Time-averaged heat flow is computed at the end of each
coupling cycle. (Time Averaged Explicit Thermal Coupling)
• You can control the frequency that the radiation field is updated as the continuous phase
solution proceeds for steady and transient simulations. (Iteration Parameters For Radiation
Solve Frequency)
• You can now specify anisotropic thermal conductivity in solids where the directions follow the
curvature of the geometry using a Curvilinear Coordinate System. (Anisotropic Thermal Con-
ductivity with Curvilinear Coordinate System (CCS))
• You can now use the accelerated DO model with Soot models.
• When simulating conjugate heat transfer (CHT), you can now select a method for calculating
the heat flux that provides greater stability and robustness when a solid cell zone is defined
with highly anisotropic thermal conductivity properties (that is, a zone that has a conductivity
in one direction that is more than 100 times the value in another direction). (High Anisotropy
Heat Flux for Solid Zones)
Acoustics
• Exporting sound source data in CGNS format for the Simcenter 3D Acoustics solver by Siemens
is now enabled for polyhedral meshes. Previously, it was possible only for non-polyhedral
meshes.
• You can now have multiple active sponge layer definitions (based on the density) during a
simulation. Previously, only one sponge layer could be active. (Sponge Layers)
Turbulence
• The coefficients for the GEKO model, curvature correction coefficient, and corner flow correction
coefficient can now all be specified using an expression.
Release 2022 R2 - © ANSYS, Inc. All rights reserved. - Contains proprietary and confidential information
of ANSYS, Inc. and its subsidiaries and affiliates. 7
Fluent
• The initial velocity field generated by hybrid initialization has been improved to be more ac-
curate for cases that have both pressure-far-field and pressure-outlet boundary conditions.
Turbomachinery
• You can now perform Aerodynamic Damping (blade flutter analysis) with the Wet Steam
model for steam turbine applications. (Aerodynamic Damping (Blade Flutter Analysis))
• As pre-requisite to some turbo features, you can create a Turbomachine Description that
contains some general information about the turbomachine being modeled. (Turbomachinery
Description)
• Complex mode shape profiles can now be replicated (expanded) using the Replicate Profile
dialog box. (Complex Mode Shape Profile Replication)
• The Create/Edit Turbo Interfaces dialog box for generating mesh interfaces has been enhanced
to provide greater ease-of-use for selecting, viewing, and filtering interfaces and interface
zones. (Creating and Editing General Turbo Interfaces)
Reacting Flows
• For the species and composition PDF transport models, the Inlet Diffusion option is no longer
available in the Species Model dialog box because it is not considered a physically plausible
boundary condition. However, you can still enable it via the define/models/species/in-
let-diffusion text command.
• For simulations that involve the species transport model, you can now disable the linearization
of the species source terms for the discrete phase by setting the define/models/dpm/in-
teraction/linearized-dpm-species-source-terms? text command to no.
• A Text User Interface (TUI) option has been added to disable the random diameter sampling
for the tabulated size distribution:
define/models/dpm/injections/injection-properties/set/size-distri-
bution/use-randomized-diameter-sampling?
This option can be useful in situations where the number of initial particle positions is so small
that the random sampling approach cannot accurately represent the diameter distribution of
a spray.
• For simulations that involve overset meshes, a new text command, define/models/dpm/nu-
merics/high-resolution-tracking/particle-relocation/overset-reloca-
tion-robustness-level, has been added. This command provides a trade-off between
performance and robustness when relocating particles in overset meshes.
• The tabulated specification of the particle diameter distribution is now supported for volume
injections.
• You can now print properties of selected injection(s) in the Ansys Fluent console. (Listing In-
jection Properties)

New Features in Ansys Fluent 2022 R2
• For unsteady particle tracking, you can now inject wall film particles from surfaces. (Injecting
Wall Film Particles )
• For simulations that involve the dense discrete phase model (DDPM), enhanced packing limit
numerics is now fully supported. In addition to the text user interface command
define/models/dpm/numerics/enhanced-packing-limit-numerics? available
as a beta feature in the previous release, the Enhanced Numerics option has been added to
the Discrete Phase Model dialog box (Numerics tab).
• The blockage effect is now fully supported. It allows you to include the volume displacement
effect of particles in your simulation. The effect can now be enabled directly in the Discrete
Phase Model dialog box by selecting the Volume Displacement option (Physical Models
tab). (Including the Volume Displacement of Particles)
• For cases, that include inert or combusting particles, the constant-HTC, Nusselt-number, and
Gunn correlations are now fully supported for modeling heat transfer between the dispersed
and carrier phases. They were available as a beta feature in the previous release. In addition,
the Tomiyama and Hughmark correlations are now available. These models can be used for
modeling heat transfer in standard, bubbly, or dense flows. (Heat Transfer Coefficient)
• You can now use the massless particle type with volume injections. (Point Properties for Volume
Injections)
Multiphase Models
• For the Wet Steam model, Real Gas Property (RGP) tables can now be used to determine the
fluid mixture properties when using the density-based solver.
• For VOF and mixture multiphase simulations that involve automatic pseudo-time step calcula-
tions, the advanced stepping method that takes into account viscous and surface tension time
scales along with time-step size variation controls is now available for better stability. (Text
User Interface for VOF Stability Controls)
• The semi-mechanistic boiling (SMB) model has been generalized and is no longer restricted
to meshes with y+ > 12 only. However, for better stability, it is recommended to use it for
meshes with y+ > 5.
– Non-local boundary field model (NLBF) model (in the Temperature... category):
See Alphabetical Listing of Field Variables and Their Definitions in the Fluent User's Guide for
their definitions.

• The particle model (ia-particle) is now supported for mixture multiphase cases to estimate
the interfacial area.
• You can now use the Higbie method for calculating the interphase mass transfer coefficients.
This method is suitable for modeling mass transfer between gas and liquid phases in the
simulation of oxygen dissolution in mixing tanks. (Higbie Model)
• For the quadrature method of moments (QMOM), a new text command, define/models/mul-
tiphase/population-balance/expert/qmom/retain-qmom-sources-for-low-
vof?, has been added. This command allows you to invoke the QMOM source calculation for
cells with low secondary phase volume fractions, which can improve solution robustness in
some cases. (Solution Strategies)
• New methods, Martinez-Bazan and Inverted U-PDF, are now available for specifying the
breakage frequency and the probability density function (PDF) of particle breakage, respectively.
The Martinez-Bazan frequency predicts the breakage frequency of parent bubbles/particles
based on the local values of a maximum stable bubble size. The Inverted U-PDF assumes that
the probability of parent bubble/particle breakage into equi-sized daughter bubbles/particles
is the highest. This has been shown to produce more physical results in simulations of certain
impeller-agitated mixing tanks. These methods are widely used in stirred tank reactors. (Mar-
tinez-Bazan Breakage Kernel, Inverted U-PDF)
• The following field variables have been added (in the Potential... category):
– X Current
– Y Current
– Z Current
– dPotential/dx
– dPotential/dy
– dPotential/dz
See Field Function Definitions in the Fluent User's Guide for their definitions.
• For cases with the Include Joule Heating in Energy Equation option, the contribution from
the total heating source due to Joule heating in the domain is now reported in the Joule
Heating Source field in the Flux Reports dialog box.
• For transient cases, you can now solve the eulerian wall film at the end of the flow time step
by entering 0 either for Per Flow Iterations in the graphical user interface (GUI) or at the
Film Solution per Flow Iterations prompt under the define/models/euleri-
an-wallfilm/solution-options text command.
• For cases that involve DPM coupling, a new option called Source Smoothing is now available
in the Eulerian Wall Film dialog box (DPM Interaction tab). When this option is enabled,
smoothing is applied to the discrete phase impingement source terms to reduce the impact
of spotty source distributions.

New Features in Ansys Fluent 2022 R2
• You can now create empty iso-surfaces and iso-clips, with values outside of the current range
of the selected quantity. This can be beneficial in cases where you want to define a surface
that will become valid later in a simulation.
• You can now save images of the graphics window in GLB format.
• Steady and unsteady statistics gathered while Fluent is solving can now be computed as a
moving average, when they are set up using the Zone-Specific Sampling Options dialog box.
• You can now create mesh report definitions for the cell count (that is, the number of cells
within one or more cell zones) and/or the face count (that is, the number of faces within one
or more boundary zones). Such reports can be useful for simulations that involve adaption,
dynamic mesh remeshing, and so on. (Mesh Report Definitions)
• Light ID can now be included when saving display states for graphics objects. Refer to Con-
trolling the Display State and Modifying the View in the Fluent User's Guide for additional in-
formation.
• You can control how many points are displayed in a report plot that is being plotted in a new
Fluent session (the default is 1000 points), using the Report Plot and Data History Size field
in the Simulation branch of Preferences.
• Colors and/or realistic material colors can now be assigned to surfaces so that they always
appear consistently in subsequent displays. Refer to Realistic Rendering of Materials in the
Fluent User's Guide for additional information.
• Expression Volumes allow you to create a custom volume for the purposes of visualization.
These volumes can be complex and defined using the Fluent Expression language or they can
be as simple as specifying a cell register as the definition. You can use the Create Volume
Surface option in the appropriate cell register dialog box as a shortcut for creating expression
volumes based on cell registers. Refer to Expression Volumes in the Fluent User's Guide for ad-
ditional information.
• Animation definitions are written, by default, to the same directory as the case file. The storage
directory is saved as a relative path, which is now represented by a dot (.). The relative path
ensures that if a case file is moved or shared, the animation will still be written to a viable
directory.
Parametric Studies
• If you have an Ansys Fluent case file with input and/or output parameters, you can perform
a parametric case study directly within the Ansys Fluent interface. Both sequential and concur-
rent (on the same shared memory machines) simulations are supported. See Performing
Parametric Studies for more information.
Command Execution
• The Execute Commands dialog box (Execute Commands Dialog Box) has been improved to
allow for more complicated, multi-lined commands. In addition, you can manage your series
of commands using the Execute Commands Manager dialog box (Execute Commands Manager
Dialog Box) See Executing Commands During the Calculation for more information.

rows above and below a selected row, as well as for removing rows in the component table.
See Describing the Components of the Turbo Machine for details.
• Preferences are now available for saving task-based workflow files and for making the workflow
tasks a dockable window. See Applying Preferences to the Turbo Workflow for details.
Cell Registers
• When using a cell register based on a field variable, you now can compute the average value
and standard deviation of the field variable, and define the register to mark cells inside or
outside of a certain range defined in terms of the standard deviation, or with values below or
above a limit defined in terms of the standard deviation. (Setting Up a Field Variable Cell Re-
gister)
• When checkpointing a simulation while running multiple Fluent sessions with the same
working directory, you can now specify which particular session you want to exit through the
exit-fluent / exit-fluent.txt file. (Checkpointing an Ansys Fluent Simulation in the
Fluent User's Guide)
Load Managers
• The following new options are available from the command line when running Fluent under
any of the schedulers that are supported on Linux:

• For cases that involve the SOFC with unresolved electrolyte model, you can now include effects
of Knudsen diffusion in your simulation. This model offers more accurate computation of ef-
fective gas diffusion in the porous electrodes when the average pore size is similar to the
length of mean free path. (Modeling Fluid Flow, Heat Transfer, and Mass Transfer)
• For the following add-on modules, you can now compile user-defined functions directly in the
graphical user interface (GUI):
– Solid Oxide Fuel Cell (SOFC) module: in the Advanced Options tab of the SOFC Model
dialog box (Customizing the Fuel Cell and Electrolyses Module)
– Fuel Cell and Electrolysis module: in the Customized UDFs tab of the Fuel Cell and Electro-
lysis Models dialog box (Customizing the Fuel Cell and Electrolyses Module)
– PEM Fuel Cell module: in the Customized UDFs tab of the Fuel Cell and Electrolysis
Models dialog box (Customizing the PEM Fuel Cell Module)
Beta Features
• There are also some exciting new enhancements available as beta features that you may be
interested in trying out. Detailed documentation is in the Fluent 2022 R2 Beta Features Manual.
Fluent Icing
Fluent Icing allows you to easily conduct in-flight icing simulations within a dedicated Fluent
Application Client environment. The following additional functionality has been added in this
release.
• General
– Improved layouts, including console relocation to the pop-up message box. The size
of the panels is maintained across separate sessions.

of ANSYS, Inc. and its subsidiaries and affiliates. 15
Fluent
– A queuing system is now supported in the initial Fluent Launcher where the Icing
workspace is selected. The queuing settings will apply to the workspaces launched by
Fluent Icing. The queuing settings can also be included in the icing command line.
– Turbulence intensity and turbulent viscosity ratio are added to inlet boundary conditions.
– The density based solver (DBNS) is now an option offered in the solver type settings.
• Particles
– Custom droplet distributions can now be used, edited interactively, and imported/exported
using .csv files.
– Droplet distribution computations can be set to restart from the previous size’s solution or
the uniform initial condition. Restarting usually leads to less iterations for the overall process.
– Support for disabled walls is added to the remeshing process, allowing you to deactivate
certain surfaces in the model to reduce the mesh and problem size for the icing module. It
is provided as a beta feature pending extended testing.
– CAD defeaturing problem (airfoils getting thinner, etc.) associated with the repetitive
remeshing of the same uniced walls is now resolved by including both the iced and the
initial clean surfaces in the remeshing process.
– The impact ice density model which was released as beta for Ansys FENSAP-ICE 2022 R1 is
now available in Fluent Icing. This model computes an ice density based on local droplet
impact angle and freezing fraction on the surface. You can review Fluent Icing and FENSAP-
ICE Beta Features Manual for more information.
Fluent Aero
Fluent Aero allows you to easily explore the aerodynamic performance of aircrafts under a wide
range of flight regimes, from subsonic to hypersonic conditions, all within a dedicated Fluent
Application Client environment. A streamlined workflow guides you through the creation of a
matrix of flight conditions or design points where single and multiple flight parameters, such as
angle of attack, mach number, altitude, etc., can vary. Most common models, solvers, and con-
vergence settings of Fluent are tuned using the latest best practices for external aerodynamic
problems and are available in Fluent Aero’s user interface. In this manner, simulations can be
conducted in a quick and user-friendly environment. The full capabilities of the Fluent Solution

New Features in Ansys Fluent 2022 R2
workspace remain accessible when its session is displayed through Workspaces → Solution
within the Fluent Aero ribbon. Tutorials are available to provide examples on how to conduct
exploratory simulations using single and multiple flight parameters.
In this release, a broad range of features have been added and are described below.
• A new Design Points ribbon has been added to manage the generation and calculation of
design points in the Design Points Table and to monitor their status.
• A new Parameter Search beta feature has been implemented to search for an input parameter
that satisfies a target output parameter. Currently, this feature searches for an angle-of-attack
that meets a target lift force or lift coefficient.
• Turbulence boundary conditions can now be applied to all inlet boundaries directly from Fluent
Aero.
• Selected airflow properties are now considered during the calculation of CFD boundary condi-
tions when Reynolds number, Mach number, Total Pressure or Total Temperature are set
as input parameters. This enhances consistency between airflow properties at the boundary
surfaces and within the computational domain.
• Single design point simulations can now be calculated using python scripts in full batch mode
(without the user interface displayed). Multiple design point simulations can still be calculated
using python scripts in interactive batch mode (with the user interface displayed).
• A beta feature has been added to export Fluent Aero’s results to an advanced .aero file
compatible with STK Aviator. This allows the performance of the aircraft to be defined by
Fluent Aero’s CFD calculations.
• The console logs of the client (Fluent Aero) and the server (Fluent Solution) have been combined
into a single console window. This provides better monitoring of the sequence of operations
done between the client and the server. Furthermore, layout controls have been added to
hide or display the console.
• Cluster scheduler settings, such as Slurm settings, can now be applied directly in the initial
Fluent Launcher panel that opens Fluent Aero. These settings are automatically stored and
used when the user later creates or opens a simulation within Fluent Aero, resulting in a more
user-friendly experience.
Many of the powerful features of Ansys Polyflow are now available directly in Ansys Fluent
through the new Fluent Materials Processing workspace. The Fluent Materials Processing workspace
is a means to explore manufacturing applications such as polymer extrusion, blowmolding, fiber
spinning, etc. within the Fluent environment. The workspace supports:
• Pressing / Forming

Fluent
• Other features such as Film Casting, Porous Media, Mesh Superposition Technique, and Vis-
coelastic models are available as beta features.
General
Mesh Generation
• For the Watertight Geometry Meshing workflow, periodic improvements have been made such
that, after volume meshing, periodic boundary names are processed with a "periodic-" prefix
followed by the name of adjacent cell zone, instead of the previous numbering scheme, making
for an enhanced user experience especially when working with complex models.
• The enhanced orthogonal quality definition is now improved to better represent the quality
of the mesh.
• Changes have been introduced to better handle cases containing surface bodies defined in
SCDM/DM. These changes may impact existing journals and/or workflow files where corrections
were made to region assignments, as those corrections may no longer be necessary.
• For the Fault-tolerant Meshing workflow, improvements have been made to the Choose Part
Replacement Options task. For instance, soft size controls are now applied to scaled bound-
aries, zone naming is more consistent for porous objects, and scoped size controls that are
not valid are now filtered out.
– The user interface is improved: the Rapid Octree dialog box now has labels that are more
user-friendly; and text commands are now available that allow you to list all size function

definitions, as well as to change and/or delete individual size function definitions (previously
this was only possible through the Rapid Octree dialog box).
– The Boundary Projection treatment is improved to better handle small faults in the
boundary geometry. Note that because of this improvement, you are no longer prompted
by a Question dialog box to indicate your approval to continue the meshing process for
problematic geometries.
– When using the Bound by Bounding Box volume specification, the default names for the
face zones that are created for the sides of the bounding box are now tunnel-<dom_ext>,
where <dom_ext> represents the domain extent (tunnel-xmax, tunnel-xmin, tunnel-ymax,
and so on). Previously, the names were wall-<ID>. To use the previous naming convention,
enter the following text command prior to meshing: file/set-tui-version "22.1".
For details about the Rapid Octree mesher, see Generating Rapid Octree Meshes in the Fluent
User's Guide.
Solver-Meshing
• When you enable remeshing for a dynamic mesh simulation, the unified remeshing method
is now selected by default (instead of methods-based remeshing). The unified remeshing
method simplifies the setup and can provide increased robustness, especially for parallel sim-
ulations. The use of this method is controlled by the following text command: define/dy-
namic-mesh/controls/remeshing-parameters/unified-remeshing?. Answer
no to revert to the default behavior of the previous release (for example, for a mesh that re-
quires the 2.5D remeshing method), and then enable the relevant methods using the
define/dynamic-mesh/controls/remeshing-parameters/remeshing-methods
text command; or answer yes to take advantage of the unified remeshing method for a case
file created using a previous release. For details about dynamic mesh remeshing, see
Remeshing.
• The algorithm for the polyhedral unstructured mesh adaption (PUMA) method is enhanced so
that it is no longer necessary to encapsulate all child cells of a refined parent to its respective
partition in parallel. By default this encapsulation is now disabled; this improves the load balance
of cells across partitions, particularly for higher levels for refinement. The encapsulation is
controlled by the following text command: mesh/adapt/set/encapsulate-children?;
answer yes to revert to the default behavior of the previous release (for example, for a case
that is negatively impacted because it undergoes frequent dynamic adaption), or answer no
to take advantage of this improvement for a case file created using a previous release. For
details about adaption, see Adapting the Mesh.
• When using the predefined criterion to adapt the mesh of a combustion simulation along a
progressing flame front, the field variable cell registers automatically defined now use limits
that are based on the standard deviation of the field variables rather than isovalues, and the
gradient of temperature is used rather than the curvature. This should reduce the overall cell
count, without affecting the accuracy. To revert to the cell register definitions from the previous

Fluent
release, enter the following text command prior to selecting the adaption criterion: file/set-
tui-version "22.1".
• The enhanced orthogonal quality definition is now improved to better represent the quality
of the mesh. For further details about this definition, see Mesh Quality.
• The gap model (used to simulate flow through narrow gaps that open or close) is improved,
as the parameters used to mark fluid cells for flow blockage / deceleration are now tuned to
promote better performance. Consequently, the gap shapes that result may be different when
compared to the previous release. To revert to the marking behavior and performance of the
previous release, enter the following Scheme command in the console: (rpsetvar 'narrow-
gaps/marking/smoothing-by-adjacent-cells? #t). For further details about the
gap model, see Controlling Flow in Narrow Gaps for Valves and Pumps.
Solver-Numerics
• When using the pressure-based solver, the auto select option for the mass flux computation
is improved (with regard to the criteria used to decide which Rhie-Chow formulation is more
likely to be robust for the flow models and mesh attributes of your case) and is now enabled
by default. This option is defined using the following text command: solve/set/flux-
type; answer no to the first prompt if you read a mesh file and want to revert to the default
behavior of the previous release (and then enter your preferred flux type in the prompt that
follows), or answer yes to the first prompt if you want to take advantage of this improved
option for a case file created using a previous release.
Note that if you enabled the auto select option in a case file saved in a previous release, the
Rhie-Chow: distance based option is no longer automatically selected for all cases that use
a compressible fluid when you read it with release 2022 R2, but is now automatically selected
only for the following combination: a transient simulation that uses a Scale-Resolving Simulation
(SRS) model, a compressible fluid, and an adapted mesh. If the automatically selected flux type
changes for your case (as noted in an Information dialog box that opens when you read the
case file) and you want to revert to the less robust flux type used in a previous release, enter
the following text command: solve/set/flux-type no 0.
For further details about the mass flux settings, see Mass Flux Types.
• The default convergence criterion for locally scaled residuals for transient flows is increased
from 10-5 to 10-4 in order to reduce the number of iterations required within a single time
step. You can use the following text command if you want to revert this setting for a mesh
file to the value used in the previous release, or if you want to specify the new value for a case
file created in a previous release: solve/monitors/residual/convergence-criteria.
• To improve usability, the input control for defining the Pseudo Time Method in the Solution
Controls task page is no longer a check box that is enabled / disabled, but is now a drop-
down list from which you can select Off, Global Time Step, or Local Time Step. The following
also changed as part of this improvement: for the Local Time Step method, the Under-Relax-
ation Factors group box in the Solution Controls task page is now renamed Pseudo Time
Under-Relaxation Factors; and for the VOF model, the Pseudo-Transient Stabilization option
in the Stabilization Methods dialog box is now renamed Pseudo Time Stabilization.
Note that as part of the enhancements to the pseudo time methods, it is possible that the
pseudo time method settings will change for cases that were created using release 16.0 or

Updates Affecting Ansys Fluent 2022 R2 Code Behavior
older (such as whether Global Time Step is selected from the Pseudo Time Method drop-
down list, and how the Expert tab of the Advanced Solution Controls dialog box is set up),
and would need to be adjusted if you want to reproduce the previous solution behavior.
For further details about the pseudo time methods, see Performing Calculations with a Pseudo
Time Method.
• By default, the shadow zones for conformal periodic boundary zone pairs are now shown in
any list of boundary zones presented by the user interface. Like the primary periodic zone, the
shadow zone is of type periodic. When a new conformal periodic boundary zone pair is created,
the shadow zone retains its original name or (if it uses a default name) is renamed automatically
as periodic-<ID>; if you read a case file created in a previous release, the name of the shadow
zone is the primary zone name with -shadow appended to it. To revert to the behavior in
previous releases, enter the following text command: mesh/show-periodic-shadow-
zones? no. For further details on periodic boundary zone pairs, see Creating Periodic Zones
and Interfaces.
• The solution results may now be more accurate for a transient case that has a porous media
cell zone adjacent to a velocity inlet or mass-flow inlet boundary condition, due to a correction
in the pressure treatment at such boundaries. Cases that are unaffected by this correction are
those that use PRESTO! for the pressure discretization scheme and/or those in which you have
used the following text command to disable the extrapolation of pressure on flow inlets:
solve/set/bc-pressure-extrapolations. For further details about porous media
cell zones, see Porous Media Conditions.
Turbulence
• For the Synthetic Turbulence Generator (STG), frequencies of individual harmonics are now
stabilized by a time averaging procedure. This prevents corruption in the phase of the STG
harmonic function when inlet velocity is not constant in time (pressure inlet or velocity inlet
with a time-dependent inlet velocity). To revert to the previous behavior, use the following
command: (rpsetvar 'synthetic-turb/stg/incremental-time-argument?
#f).
Turbo Workflow
• When using the Describe Component task in the Turbo Workflow, the default value for the
Tip Gap? option is now automatically set to No for stators and Yes for rotors. In addition, if
the Tip Gap? option is set to Yes for a stator region, it will be considered to be a hub gap
with a moving boundary condition assigned to the associated hub surface.
• In cases that involve Lagrangian wall film (LWF) particles, the LWF particles are no longer in-
cluded in the DPM concentration calculation. Consequently, when postprocessing the DPM
Concentration field variable, the solution results will now be more realistic. If you want to
include the LWF particles in the DPM concentration calculation, you can use the
define/models/dpm/options/include-lwf-particles-in-dpm-concentration?
text command.

Fluent
Multiphase Models
• For the semi-mechanistic boiling (SMB) model, a few improvements have been implemented,
especially in the calculations of reference quantities and wall evaporation. The solution results
are now expected to be more accurate.
• The algorithm of the non-local boundary field model (NLBF) model has been improved. This
will result in more accurate predictions of line-averaged temperature in boiling cases that use
the NLBF correction.
• The default impingement model of the EWF model has been changed to the Ansys Fluent
model described in The Stanton-Rutland Model in the Fluent Theory Guide to provide the same
solution results as those for the Lagrangian Wall Film model. Previously, the default impingement
model was based on the original model by Stanton and Rutland (see D. W. Stanton and C. J.
Rutland "Modeling Fuel Film Formation and Wall Interaction in Diesel Engines", SAE Paper
960628, 1996). If you are observing significant changes in results, you can revert to the old
default impingement model by issuing the following Scheme command in the Ansys Fluent
console:
(enable-impinge-stanton-rutland #t)
Parallel Processing
• For Fluent sessions that use a small number of solver processes, the reading of large mesh or
case files is now faster (up to 48% faster).
• For cases with large numbers of cell zones, the calculations of the Algebraic Multigrid (AMG)
solver should now be faster when running with a large number of solver processes (approxim-
ately 100 processes or more). The solutions may be calculated on the order of 5% faster.
When using parallel Fluent on Linux, the default version of the Intel message passing interface
(MPI) is now upgraded to 2021 update 3. Two known limitations for this MPI are:
1) Memory consumption increases by about 100-150 MB for each MPI process. If this memory
increase cannot be tolerated, you can attempt to revert to Intel MPI 2018 using a fallback
feature, as described in the Intel 2018 Message Passing Interface Fallback.
2) On some old CPUs, the affinity settings applied by the new default MPI may cause a per-
formance degradation. In such scenarios, expected performance can be recovered by selecting
the Fluent-managed process affinities as described in Parallel Options.
• The thermal conductance (the product of the heat transfer coefficient (h) and the interfacial
area (A)) is now stored directly in the Trackt_Particle structure and can be accessed/mod-
ified in a UDF through the variable tp->htcA. In previous releases, it was stored in the DPM-
sources structure. Existing UDFs that use the old variable location tp->source.htcA
must be updated to instead use the new variable tp->htcA. The contribution from this
variable to the linearized part of the DPM source term is now handled internally by Ansys
Fluent. The variable has units of W/K.

Features To Be Removed in a Future Release
Solution Mode
• The use of mesh interfaces created with the many-to-many interface method will not be supported
in a future release. It is recommended that you migrate your cases to use the default one-to-one
interface method through the following text command: define/mesh-interfaces/one-
to-one-pairing? yes. For a list of the advantages of using the one-to-one method, see
Using a Non-Conformal Mesh in Ansys Fluent in the Fluent User's Guide. Note that the automatic
naming convention for mesh interfaces may be different with the one-to-one method, as described
in Interface Zones Automatic Naming Conventions in the Fluent User's Guide.
• The contact marks method for flow control (available when contact detection is enabled in a
dynamic mesh simulation) is deprecated and will be removed in a future release. It is recommen-
ded that you disable flow control and use the gap model instead. Flow control can be disabled
using the following text command: define/dynamic-mesh/controls/contact-para-
meters/flow-control? no. The gap model can then be set up through the following text
command menu: define/gap-model/. For details on the gap model, see Controlling Flow
in Narrow Gaps for Valves and Pumps in the Fluent User's Guide.

enhanced-cell-relocation-method? (New)
When enabled, Ansys Fluent uses a more rigorous method of locating the cell in which the
particle is currently contained. This approach is computationally more expensive than the default
method; however, it is recommended for cases when Fluent reports that particles are lost after
the mesh has been changed due to MDM, dynamic adaption, or repartitioning.

overset-relocation-robustness-level (New)
Sets the performance/robustness trade-off when relocating particles in overset meshes. The
default value is 1, which corresponds to a more robust algorithm. Performance may be improved
by setting the value to 0; however, this may result in particle loss, particularly if the mesh is
moving. You need to make sure that no particle loss occurs.
