Considerations for School Based Services

One of the purposes of an IEP team, which often includes the parents, is to discuss the

progress and review goals of the patient. Under IDEA, all students must be placed in the "Least

Restrictive Environment". One of the goals of the IEP team is to decide what that is for each

student. Some Deaf and Hard of Hearing students are best placed in a traditional classroom with

assistive devices, while others are better served with different placement. While all students with

hearing loss, regardless of the severity of communication difficulties, are entitled to the same

education as their hearing peers, the IEP team considers a child’s academic needs, mode of

communication, pragmatic competence and language proficiency when considering educational

placement.

AR SLP's assist in determining a student’s means of communication in various

communicative settings. They might use a sound level meter to determine the state of the

auditory environment a child will be placed in and make recommendations for accommodation.

They should make a practice of learning multiple communication approaches, sometimes to

assist educators in things like captioning, to better serve and communicate with their clients.
