History of International Leo Movement
Coach Jim Graver started the Leo ball rolling in 1957 and
Chances are that ball was a baseball. Graver was the
Baseball coach of the Abington High School in
Pennsylvania, USA and ac active member of the Glenside
The First Leo Club was charted on December 4, 1957.
As the World’s First Leo Club, the Abington High School

Leo Club created the Leo Acronym – Leadership, Equality,
Opportunity – and chose their school colors.
Later, Equality was changed to Experience.
In October 1967, the Board of Directors of Lions Clubs

International adopted the Leo Club Program as an official
Program of the association.
The Leo Club Program has continued to grow within the

Last 63 years. Leos now constitute an International network
Of over 7,200 clubs in over 150 countries. Community service
Remains the cornerstone of the program, fostering a lifetime
Commitment to helping others. Like their Lion counterparts,
Leo Club members enjoy serving their neighbors and watching
Positive results unfold.
Message from
District Governor
“Empowering and grooming the next generation of leaders is the
way to creating an everlasting change”. Its with immense pleasure
I convey my well wishes for the new leoistic year. Leos have been
at the forefront of serving humanity and helping communities for
decades worldwide. The leos of your club and specially leos of
district 306c1 have stood strong in solidarity upholding the true
spirit of lionism.
This year, under the theme “strive for excellence” I have given
special consideration to giving more opportunities for leos to take
up leadership positions and work in unison with lions. Which
would pave for the leos to further enhance their leadership skills
and ultimately become more competent leaders not only serving
as leos but as future leaders of lions district 306c1.
With this year being a challenging year for all of us, I would like
to urge all leos to look at it as an opportunity rather than a
disadvantage. Lets join hands in unity, leaving aside all our
differences for our motherland, make our badge of lions
worthwhile and lead by example.
On a final note, I wish all the strength and courage to all leos of
leo Leo Club of Thalangama Malabe and Club President in
making this year another remarkable year of service.

District Chairman
for Leos
It is with great pleasure that I pen my thoughts on your 9th Annual Club
Installation Ceremony. I feel excited and honoured at the same time to
be a part of your ceremony not only as District Chairperson for Leos
but as a former Leo where once I was like you and a proud Past District
President of Leo District 306 C1.
On your club installation it is important to remember the inception of
your Leo club and this reminds me of few important individuals that
need to be mentioned on this very important day.
Leo Club of Thalangama Malabe was chartered in the year 2014-2015
with the leadership of Past District President Leo Sagara Gunawardane
and District Governor Lion Kusum Sandanayaka MJF MAF JP. It is as
much important to mention your sponsoring Lions Club – Lions Club of
Thalangama Malabe and your Club Advisor Lion Padmakumara
Jeewandara. I must also mention your Charter President Leo Mewan
Jayasinghe. We must always remember these individuals as the
founders of your club and must be remembered at every installation.
As you are aware the Leo Club Program is an attractive platform for the
youth to develop their leadership skills, team working and interpersonal
skills, individually and collectively through organizing of service
oriented activities which is benefited by the community at large. The
leadership ladder in which a Leo can grow extends to many positions
starting from club level to district level to multiple level. Lions Clubs
International has now extended the capability of a Leo to reach as a
Lion through its special transition program called the Leo-Lions
membership. A current or former Leo who have served for at least one
year plus one day and in the age of legal majority (18 Yrs.) through the
age of 35 years can become a Leo-Lions Member.
On your 9th Annual Club Installation Ceremony, I greatly appreciate the
time, effort and the leadership given by the outgoing Club President
Leo Malinda Jayawardena, and the team for the Leoistic year 2021-
2022, I am sure you will be remembered in the highlights of your club
as time goes by. On behalf of the District Governor Lion Gamini
Kumarasinghe and the Lions District I would like to extend our heartiest
thanks to the entire outgoing team.

Leos, Leoism is a place that provides you the platform to experiment
with new things and make mistakes by motivating and encouraging
you as an individual and a team. Life is always about inspiration and
dedication we behold for the things we are committed to and
passionate on. The Leo movement is the best platform for you to grab
that opportunity to gain the experience to become the best version of
a leader in you.
Leo Club of Thalangama Malabe has been one of the active Leo Clubs
in Sri Lanka has performed well collectively & Individually throughout
the past few years and showcased their brilliance in Leadership
Experience & Opportunity. The Club is rich with some key individuals
who are very much supportive to the movement, and it has never
failed to fulfil their duties to the movement and to our society as well. I
would like to convey my warm wishes to Club President 2021/22 Leo
Malinda and his team for the leadership given to the Leo Club and
performing well throughout the last year without any dilemma & also
handing over the baton to the incoming club president to carryout his
Leadership smoothly.

It is with utmost delight and contentment that I pen this message to the
Annual Club Directory of Leo Club of Thalangama Malabe for the Leostic
year 2022/23. Firstly, I offer my sincere appreciation for the invitation to
express my words on this propitious occasion of the 09th Annual Club
Installation Ceremony.
As one of the leading Leo Clubs in the District Leo Club of Thalangama
Malabe has achieved several milestones during the past years while
maintaining a quality membership, administrative excellence and wide
variety of sustainable projects. The club itself serves as a best example of
how teamwork can bring about a change in the society and continuously
produced leaders to serve the District. In this regard, it is indeed with
honor I emphasize that the Club has been able to produce the current
Vice District President of Leo District 306 C1 as a proud product.
I hereby deliver my best wishes to Leo Malinda Jayawardane the

Outgoing Club President and his team for the boundless work and
dedication towards the club and the District in the Leostic year 2021/22.
And I believe that the newly installed President Leo Anusha Maduranga
will take the Club into greater heights and work towards the growth of the
movement.
As the President of Leo District 306 C1, I anticipate that the Leo Club of
Thalangama Malabe will continue to support the Leo Multiple and District
while pursuing the vision and mission for the upcoming Leostic year
corresponding to the year plan, providing Leos with opportunities to

It is indeed a great honour and pleasure for me to pen down my
thoughts in your club directory, as your Leo Club Advisor. Let me
congratulate the President and members of your LEO Club who
are committed to serving the underprivileged and taking up the
leadership roles of your club. I am very fortunate to be your LEO
Adviser as I am always impressed by the dedication and
commitment displayed by the members of the Talangama Malabe
Leo Club towards carrying out many service projects benefiting
those less fortunate and needy, and communities at large in the
club and district level.
Through many years of excellence services and achievements,

your club has been recognized by the Leo District as an
enthusiastic contributor to the success of Leo activities in our
District.
We are one big family of Lions and Leos. The flame of our Lions
and LEO spirit will continue to burn and motivates all of us to
reach out to our communities in need, despite the challenges

It is a great privilege to have the opportunity to be the 9th President of
Leon Club of Thalangama Malabe. We have successfully cOmpleted 8
years in the Leo mOvement. We have gained goOdwill amOng our fellOw
Leo Clubs in the District as well as in the Multiple. I have been in many
pOsitions in the club in the past years and have experienced lOts Of
changes, challenges, new initiatives in this mOvement.
My vision is to make our Leo Club united as a family and to take it to the
top of the ladder which cannot be done in a single day. I will need all the
member’s support to make my vision a reality. As the Club President, I
will ensure a higher membership growth in our club and to build a strong
second line team to take the leadership of the club in the upcoming
years.
My plan is to cOntinue all the icOnic prOject which we have dOne

cOntinuOusly in the previous years and launch new initiatives which will
be beneficial tO the cOmmunity. I believe that it will Open many
OppOrtunities tO reach the cOmmunity mOre. I am cOnfident that my
Leo family will suppOrt at their best tO implement the year plan

History of Leo Club of Thalangama Malabe
Leo Club of Thalangama Malabe started its journey in 2014 with the
leadership of Leo Mewan Jayasinghe. He was an Undergraduate in
CINEC Maritime University and had an idea to serve the local
community. He came to Lions Club of Thalangama Malabe with his
team to initiate this idea. Meanwhile the children of Thalangama
Malabe Lions had an idea to form a Leo Club. This gave a great
opportunity for both the parties.
As a decision taken after a series of discussions, the President of

Lions Club of Thalangama Malabe in 2014/15, Lion Salinda
Rathnayake and Lion Padmakumara Jeewandara agreed to sponsor
the Leo Club and Leo Club of Thalangama Malabe joined the Leo
Movemnt as a club in Leo District 306 C1 in the Leoistic Year
2014/15 under the district presidency of then Leo Sagara
Gunawardena. Lion Padmakumara Jeewandara as the Club Advisor,
showed us the correct path, guided us in all the projects, events and
etc.
Leo Poorna Senadheera (2015/2016), Leo Nipuna Kularatne

(2016/17), Leo Sithira Hapuarachchi (2017/2018), Leo Yasiru Perera
( 2018/19), Leo Thimira Uyanhewage (2019/20), Leo Vinuri
Settinayake (2020/21) and Leo Malinda Jayawardane (2021/22)
rendered their fullest effort during their tenure as the president and
took the club to greater heights.
Leo Club of Thalangama Malabe had shown their leadership

capacities by recognizing for their outstanding services many times
in District and Multiple District Level over the past 8 years.
Leo Club of Thalangama Malabe will be taking lead for the 9th Year
under the Presidency of Leo Anusha Maduranga in 2022/23.
