An additional important aspect of a large range of positive stability is that it makes it easier to survive a

capsize caused by a breaking wave.Following such a capsize, yachts with limited stability used to remain
inverted. The likelihood of a capsize increases with the size of the wave, so smaller vessels are more
likely to capsize.Small yachts and those sailing in exposed waters where a larger wave is more likely are
frequently subject to standards that call for a greater range of positive stability. There is, for instance, an
alternative in the MCA standard for vessels larger than 45 meters, ref[8].A range of less than 90 degrees
may be considered in this particular instance, subject to agreed-upon operational criteria.
