Civilization topic 1.

“ A travel magazine is running a competition and has asked its

readers to describe a place in an English-speaking country they think is ideal for
holidays. Write the description of the place and explain why you have chosen this place.”
~
Jurassic Coast, a place so beautiful it often features on posters for British tourism, the
Jurassic Coast is a UK holiday destination everyone should visit at least once. It was England's
first natural UNESCO World Heritage Site and if you like beaches, you'll find 95 miles of
dramatic coastline to discover.
Lulworth Cove and Durdle Door are its most iconic spots, while the pretty seaside towns
of Swanage, Lyme Regis and West Bay are worth adding to your list. This spectacular region in
Dorset has plenty of history, too - we're talking dinosaur history! Famous around the world as
one of the richest heritage sites for prehistoric remains, the Jurassic Coast is the place to join a
fossil hunting walk.
I would really recommend visiting the Jurassic Coast , because it’s a very beautiful place
and surely you can spend a great holiday there.

Civilization topic 2. “Your school magazine has asked its readers to write an article
describing their favorite capital of an English-speaking country. Write a description of
your chosen city that you could send to the magazine.”
~
My favorite capital of an English-speaking country is London, the capital of England and
the United Kingdom.
London is the capital city of the United Kingdom. It is the U.K.'s largest metropolis and its
economic, transportation, and cultural center. London is also among the oldest of the world's
great cities, with its history spanning nearly two millennia. Besides its great history, London is a
very beautiful and practical city. There you have many opportunities and lot’s of things to see.
So I think London is one of the best capitals in the world, with a big power, beautiful
history, beautiful places and many more.

Civilization topic 3. “Your friend is going to visit the capital of an English-speaking

country. He or she is passionate about urban architecture. Recommend her or him a
monument, building, square or street to visit by describing it and explaining your
choice.”
~
I would recommend him or her to visit the Victoria Memorial in London, designed and
executed by the sculptor Thomas Brock. Designed in 1901, it was unveiled on 16 May 1911, though
it was not completed until 1924.

The monument is 25 meters high and uses 2,300 tonnes of white Carrara marble. As
well as Victoria, there are statues representing courage, constancy, victory, charity, truth and
motherhood.
I think if you are passionate about urban architecture the Victoria Memorial from London
is a great choice, because not only the monument is very well built but around the monument is
a stunning architecture which represents the culture of England.

Civilization topic 4: “Your school magazine has asked its readers to write an article on a
national symbol of an English-speaking country. Write a description of the selected symbol
and explain what it symbolizes.”
~

One of the greatest flags.

There are 3 symbols that define a country: flag, anthem and language. The flag in my
opinion is the most important of them all.

The US flag is easily one of the most recognizable. It consists of 50 stars

representing the 50 states and there are 13 horizontal stripes representing the 13 original
colonies. The colors of the flag are symbolic as well; red symbolizes hardiness and valor,
white symbolizes purity and innocence, and blue represents vigilance, perseverance and
justice.

Civilization topic 5: a popular sport in an English-speaking country that is not practiced in

our country (cricket, lacrosse, rugby, horse racing)
~
Here is a list of a few sports that are not practiced in Moldova but are in english-
speaking countries: cricket, lacrosse, rugby, horse racing. I would like to talk here about cricket.
The sport of cricket has a known history beginning in the late 16th century. Cricket is the
national sport of the U.K. and became popular in the U.K. in the 17th century. Today there are
18 professional country clubs in the U.K. with all of them being named after historic
counties. The main objective in cricket is to score as many runs as possible against the
opponent. Before the match begins, the captain of both teams will toss a coin, with the winner of
the toss being able to decide which team bats and fields first.

Civilization topic 6: Write a description of a monument from an English-speaking country

that you would like to visit. Explain why.
~

One of the greatest monuments of the US is the Statue of Liberty. Located on Liberty Island in
New York Harbor, the statue commemorates the friendship between the United States and
France that began during the American Revolution. Her official name is "Liberty Enlightening the
World." The statue - also known as "Lady Liberty". The Statue of Liberty stands as a universal
symbol of freedom.

I would like to visit this monument because of its importance for the US. Undoubtedly one of the
greatest sights I will ever experience.

Civilization topic 7. “Write a description of an important historic event in an English-

speaking country and its impact on the country.”
~
One of the most important historic events from the history of England is the Battle of
Waterloo.
The Battle of Waterloo was the final clash after years of war between European nations
and French emperor Napoleon Bonaparte. The allied forces led by the Duke of Wellington - who
described the battle as 'a damned close-run thing' - defeated Napoleon's imperial ambitions.
This led to peace in Europe for years to come and helped to end centuries of conflict between
England and France.
This event helped England build better relationships with their neighbors, France. And
this event paved the way for the U.K. to become a global power through England getting
territorial possession around the world.

Civilization topic 8. “Imagine that you have the opportunity to invite for dinner a
politician from an English Speaking country who passed away. Justify your choice and
describe his/her impact on the development of his/her country. “
~
If I had the opportunity to invite a passed away politician from an English Speaking
country, I would choose one of the ex presidents of the USA John.F.Kennedy.
Historians credit Kennedy most for his skills in public persuasion and his vision. He also
rates well for crisis management and handling international relations. He stood up to the Soviets
and successfully defused the Cuban Missile Crisis. He also inspired Americans by vowing to put
a man on the moon, and he supported progress on civil rights.
I think John.F.Kennedy was one of the greatest and bravest presidents in the USA and I
would love to have dinner with such a legend.

Civilization topic 9. “Give an example of a musician from an English-speaking country
that you would like to invite to a local music festival. Justify your choice and describe
his or her impact on the development of our civilization.”
~
If I ever had the opportunity to invite a musician to a local music festival I would like to
invite Jacques Bermon Webster II.
Jacques Bermon Webster II, also known by his stage name Travis Scott , is an American
rapper, singer, songwriter, and record producer.

I chose to invite Travis Scott, because he is an amazing rapper and has many popular songs
and I'm sure many other people from my local city would love to have Travis Scott as a special invite
to a local music festival.

I would love to have Travis here because not only is he an exceptional rapper, but also an
inspiration to others and he takes the majority of his profits from his clothing brand and donates it to
different charity organizations.

Civilization topic 10:”Write a description of the geographical features of an English-

speaking country.”
~

Much of the topography of the UK consists of rugged, undeveloped hills and low
mountains but there are flat and gently rolling plains in the eastern and southeastern areas of
the country. The highest point in the UK is Ben Nevis at 4,406 feet (1,343 m) and it is located in
the northern UK in Scotland.

The North Sea and Irish Sea are two of the seas that border the UK. The UK is also
open to the Atlantic Ocean. Between England and Europe is found the English Channel. This
makes the UK an island. The connection with Europe is made through an undersea tunnel.

Margaret Thatcher (13 October 1925 – 8 April 2013), was Prime Minister of the United Kingdom
from 1979 to 1990 and Leader of the Conservative Party from 1975 to 1990.

Margaret Thatcher had a great importance on our history, here are some facts about this
personality. Her political philosophy and economic policies emphasized deregulation
(particularly of the financial sector), the privatization of state-owned companies, and reducing
the power and influence of trade unions.
