SET- 8 (similar as the previous set- for practice)

In the table below is the listing of players, seeded from highest (#1) to lowest (#32), who are due to
play in an Association of Tennis Players (ATP) tournament for women. This tournament has four
knockout rounds before the final, i.e., first round, second round quarterfinals and semi-finals. In the
first round, the highest seeded player plays the lowest seeded player (seed#32) which is designated
match No. 1 of first round; the 2nd seeded player plays the 31st seeded player which is designated
match No. 2 of the first round, and so on. Thus, for instance, match No. 16 to first round is to be
played between 16th seeded player and the 17th seeded player. In the second round, the winner of
match No.1 of first round plays the winner of match No. 16 of first round and is designated match
No.1 of second round. Similarly, the winner of match No.2 of first round lays the winner of match
No.15 of first round, and is designated match No. 2 of second round. Thus, for instance, match No. 8
of the second round is to be played between the winner of match No. 8 of first round and the winner
of match No. 9 of first round. The same pattern is followed for later rounds as well.

Q1. If there are no upsets (a lower seeded player beating a higher seeded player) in the first round,
and only match Nos. 6, 7 and 8 of the second round result in upsets, then who would meet Lindsay
Davenport in quarter finals, in case Deven port reaches quarter finals?

A. Justine Henin

B. Nadia Petrova

C. Patty Schnyder

D. Venus Williams
Q2. If the top eight seeds make it to the quarterfinals, then who, among the players listed below,
would definitely not play against Maria Sharapova in the final, in case Sharapova reaches the final?

A. Amelie Mauresmo
B. Elena Dementieva
C. Kim Clijsters
D. Lindsay Davenport

Q3. If, in the first round, all even numbered matches (and none of the odd numbered ones) result in
upsets, and there are no upsets in the second round, then who could be the lowest seeded player
facing Maria Sharapova in semi-finals?

A. Anastasia Myskina
B. Flavia Pennetta
C. Nadia Petrova
D. Svetlana Kuznetsova

Q4. If Elena Dementieva and Serena William lose in the second round, while Justine Henin and Nadia
Petrova make it to the semi-finals, then who would play Maria Sharapova in the quarterfinals, in the
event Sharapova reaches quarterfinals?

A. Dinara Safina
B. Justine Henin
C. Nadia Petrova
D. Patty Schnyder

SET- 9

There are 200 teams participating in a knockout tournament where they form groups & play against
each other. So in round 1 there will be 100 teams, resulting in 100 winners. Round 2 will then have

random and granted a bye. The tournament continues till a winner is decided. No match ends in a
draw.(old cat question)

(ii)How many rounds took place ?

(iii)How many byes were granted ?

Set -1 (Source: https://youtu.be/1t4e0EpU12A )

Q1- 63; Q2- 2; Q3- 5; Q4- I believe answer is 4, but they say it is 6.

Q1. Total number of matches in stage 1 = (7+6+5+4+3+2+1)*2 =56

Total number of matches in round 1 of stage 2 = 4

Total number of matches in round 2 of stage 2 = 2

Total number of matches in round 3 of stage 2 = 1

Q2. Total number of matches in the stage 1 for a group = 28= Total number of wins/loses.
To minimise score we maximize the score of other three who advances to next stage. And their
maximum points can be 7, 6, and 5 respectively.

Remaining ten points can be distributed equally to remaining five teams. [Since ties in the points are
resolved using complex tie breaking rules only one of these ten teams advance to next stage.]

Hence answer is 2.

Q3. First, take 5 teams and eliminate 3. Distribute 25 points equally among these five teams (5
points each). Then distribute the remaining 3 points equally among 3 teams. Finally, we will be left
with two teams with only 5 points among only one will advance to next stage.

Hence answer is 5.

Q4. I think option d is correct. Here is why.

What if we give 4 points each for the top 4 teams? then we distribute remaining 12 points to
remaining 4 teams (get 3 points each).

Then definitely top 4 teams (with 4 points each) will advance to next stage.

SET-2 (A) Q1. D; Q2. B

Hint: In the opening match, Spain lost to Germany.

Only possibility for the goal status of G for 1 st 2 rounds are 1 – 0 and 2 – 1.

We need to try deducting data in two ways:

i. If G beat Sp by 1 – 0
ii. If G beat Sp by 2 – 1

SET – 5

Q1. D

Q2. C

Q3. B

Q1. Answer is 0.

If there are no upsets and draws, the final status would look like this:

D1 7W 0L Now we can use maximum of 3 draws to bring R two places up. For that we can
S 6W 1L consider that below 3 matches would be draws:
H 5W 2L
D2 4W 3L D2-P, D2- R & P- R.
P 3W 4L So, the resultant table would look like as shown below:
R 2W 5L
C 1W 6L
D1
K 7W
0W 0L
7L In this case R can come to Rank-4 based on his number of goals.
S 6W 1L
H 5W 2L
D2 2W 2D 3L
P 2W 2D 3L Q2. If all were upsets, the final status would have look like this:
R 2W 2D 3L
1
C K
1W 6L 7W 0L If H wins in below two matches:
K2 C
0W 7L 6W 1L
R- H, P- H, the new status would become:
3 R 5W 2L
4
H P 4W 3L 4W 3L Now H can come to 3rd rank based on number of goals.
5
R D2 4W 3L 3W 4L
6
P H 3W 4L 2W 5L
7
D2 S 3W 4L 1W 6L
8 D1 0W 7L
Q3. If D2 wins in the match D2-P and rest 27 matches are upsets, then D2 and P would retain their
position.

Q3. 36

Q4. 64

Hints: -

- Take the sum of first column of provided table and then divide the corresponding value by 3.
We get total runs in all the matches together in this way.
- Take the runs in one match as x, and then express rest of the runs in terms of x.
- Sachin did not score a century in any of the innings in any of the matches. So, the ratio will
be applicable for only match 3 or 5.
