Writing Notes

Objective:

After the lesson, you are expected to apply the mechanics on how to take notes.

USE OF NOTE CARDS/INDEX CARDS

Researchers makes use of index cards in noting down information gathered from reference materials.
Index cards are preferred over any other note taking materials because they could be easily arranged and they can
withstand frequent shuffling.

In the index card, the source of information is usually placed on its top portion. One index card is used
per reference. It also contains information on specific page reference/s for information purposes, Langan (1995)
as cited by Lopez (2000).

If the source of your information is a book, look at the table of contents, the introduction and the index
before you could take down notes. Summarize the information you gathered in your own words. This will enable
you to get a vivid idea on how you can focus on the chosen topic. Look at the sample given below.

Topic: THE FACTORS THAT INFLUENCE THE SELECTION OF A PROBLEM


Availability of data, funds, capability of the writer, attitude and interest of the researcher, interest
of the sponsor/benefactor should be considered, importance of the issue involved, regency of the
issue, cooperation of other people, and facilities/instruments are available.
