PEACE AND SECURITY STUDIES
- Our preconceived notion of diplomacy does not suffice the amount of work that
they actually do. The job of a diplomat is to consider a lot of factors that could
affect their objective. Usually we view the profession of diplomacy to be in line
with working in embassies, working in the international field. It takes great skill to
be a diplomat. Diplomats require empathy and human understanding in order to
put their foot forward without having to disrupt the peace between those that they
work around. In its own way diplomacy is a discipline that can be practiced, and
applied in day to day life. Much of what we do lies in the way we carry ourselves,
the way we project our thoughts and ideas, how we reason, and ultimately how
we communicate with those around us.
- AS a young person who is seriously considering a career in diplomacy it would
seem like that there are a lot of things that | would have to adjust to. It was
mentioned in the video that there is a need to be "flexible". So being able to swiftly
adapt to new and different environments. Diplomacy is ever evolving and whoever
desires to pursue a career in it must be able to go along with this evolvement.
There is also a need to be prepared to fully submerge yourself in another country.
Another thing to consider is "sacrifice". You may not always be able to have
frequent communication with your loved ones or friends but in the long run, there
may be an appreciation due to the experiences and knowledge we gather when
choosing that career path.
People tend to associate diplomacy with a view that the lives they live are
grandiose and glamorous. With having to deal with the foreign affairs of nation,
they would assume these people travel around the world gaining experiences that
not any "normal" persomn can obtain. However, diplomacy is not that grand. It is
not necessarily a "high class job". There is meaning in a diplomatic career though.
Not just in the generalized sense that diplomats help their country and people. They also help them in more personal ways. Like those mentioned in the video,
reuniting a mother and her children. Helping an old woman escape a detrimental
fate. Those seem like the things that make diplomacy work worthwhile. Even
though there are sacrifices to be made, in the end with the right intent and will
power, a lot of what diplomats work for are in some ways deeply and truly
meaninful.
“The world is bigger than you if you want to be successful in it, you have to
understand it". Finding the differences around, in order draw in the
commonalities. One of the most important things to attain in doing diplomatic
work is coming together to work in a common goal around the myriad of
differences around you. Realize that in order for you to be successful in the
diplomatic arena you have widen your horizons. You gather information in order
to draw the differences and find the commonalities. You have to be an active
listener in order for you to be in the same page to those around you,
understanding one another, and lastly be active in your community so that you
have an accurate sense of what your purpose is by doing youd job. A lot of what
diplomats do is to compromise in order to be able to achieve a desired common
outcome.
We experience diplomacy everyday. Diplomacy is something that can be
practiced in our day to day life. Diplomacy is a strength, and not a weakness. In
diplomacy, it is a requirement to have a strong mind in order to develop our peace
of mind. It can be in the most mundane day to day activities, with friends, family,
social gatherings we practice diplomacy. Living in a contested world, a world with
differing customs, values and norms, it requires the need to enhance our ability to
have a level head in high stakes times. Diplomacy is can be exercised in our day tl
day, leaving a smile which is a special gift to bring peace, our common goal.
