Preparation
• Make sure all items are accessible throughout the procedure
• Prepare insertion site according to your facility’s policy and procedure
Venipuncture
• Adopt preffered grip and remove needle cover
• Stabilize the vessel and perform the venipuncture
• Look at the catheter flash chamber for initial blood return to confirm
vessel entry
Advancement
• Upon blood visualization, lower the catheter angle almost
parallel to the skin
• Advance the catheter and needle unit 2-3 mm to ensure catheter tip
is in the vein
• While stabilizing the skin and vessel, advance the catheter off the needle
and into the vessel. Avoid pulling the needle out during advancement
Needle Removal
• Release tourniquet, if used
• Gently stabilize catheter hub while occluding the vessel to
minimize blood flow
• Remove the needle and immediately place into a puncture-resistant,
leak-proof sharps container
• Connect any accessory devices
Stabilization
• Remove wing holder and flatten out the wings
• Stabilize the catheter to the patient
• Close the IV access with the end cap or add a needle-free deveice or
extenseion set as per hospital procedure
• Flush the cannula to verify correct placement in the vein and
prevent occlusion
• Apply a sterile dressing according to your policy
and procedure
