Liverpool have been crowned champions of the Carabao Cup 2022, beating Chelsea in a penalty
shoot-out in today’s Final at Wembley Stadium to seal a record ninth triumph.
An end-to-end encounter was ultimately decided from the spot after finishing goalless after 30
minutes of extra-time, marking the most penalty kicks in a League Cup Final.
A total of 88,512 football fans were treated to a thrilling Final, with the national stadium at full
capacity for the first time for a domestic cup final since the 2020 showdown.
To penalties it went, and the narrative was a thing of beauty. KepaArrizabalaga - the goalkeeper
who refused to be substituted off by Maurizio Sarri in almost identical circumstances in the
2018-19 Carabao Cup final - came on for Mendy as a spot-kick specialist.
All 10 outfielders on both teams converted their penalties, with Kepa and Caoimhin Kelleher
powerless. The two men then stepped up to the spot themselves. Kelleher slotted it home,
whereas Kepa skied his, sending the Liverpool fans behind that goal delirious.
For Liverpool, attention will now turn to whether they can win an unprecedented quadruple.
Part one is done. They are back in the title race, have a commanding lead in their Champions
League round-of-16 tie and have seen fellow FA Cup contenders Arsenal and Manchester
United go out early. This could well be the season of all seasons for Klopp.

Indonesia condemned the violation of Ukraine’s territorial integrity on Thursday, after Russia
invaded the former Soviet Republic, but much of the rest of Southeast Asia was muted in its
reaction to the development.
Russian forces invaded Ukraine early on Thursday in what the European Union foreign affairs
chief JosepBorrell on Twitter called “among the darkest hours of Europe since the Second
World War.”
Missiles rained down on Ukrainian targets as columns of troops poured across the country’s
borders on three sides, Reuters reported. At least 40 Ukrainian soldiers were killed Thursday,
according to AP.
Indonesis said the city-state was “gravely concerned” by Russia’s announcement of what it
called a “special military operation” in Ukraine’s Donbas region.
The Ukrainian envoy to Indonesia urged stronger words and deeds from Indonesia,
Southeast Asia’s largest country and the world’s third largest democracy.
“We also expect Indonesia, like other countries in the world, to impose sanctions and also
provide deep criticism and condemn Russia's aggression,” envoy VasylHamianin said
Thursday in Jakarta.
“I think that if Indonesia speaks up, no one, no country, no region, no leader in the world
would dare to ignore it.”
