The French capital, Paris, hosts a dozen ‘repair cafes’ – free, monthly initiatives that allow
local residents to fix household objects and electronics with the help and advice of
enthusiastic volunteers. Pioneered by journalist Martine Postma in Amsterdam in 2009,
hundreds of similar workshops take place across Europe. Nearly two-thirds of Europeans
would rather repair their products than buy new ones.
"We're a society of waste and overconsumption," says Emmanuel Vallée, organiser of the
Repair Café Paris, which typically sees around 25 people attending per event, including some
online, since it launched in May 2019. "We throw things away that we don't need to and buy
new gadgets before exploring the possibility of repair. The cycle continues. It's a vicious
circle."
For Vallée and repairers like him, there's a lot of work to be done. The world produced nearly
45 million tonnes of e-waste in 2016 as consumers and businesses threw out their old
smartphones, computers and household appliances – material worth an estimated $62.5bn.
Only 20% was properly recycled. In Europe, where the problem is particularly acute,
researchers estimate that only 12% to 15% of mobile phones are properly recycled – despite
around 90% of the population owning one.
E-waste, which is often shipped illegally from the West to sprawling, toxic dumpsites in
countries like the Philippines, Ghana, Nigeria and China, is expected to grow to more than 52
million tonnes by the end of 2021, and to double by 2050 – making it the fastest growing type
of domestic waste in the world. The environmental impact ranges from huge carbon
emissions to pollution of water sources and food supply chains.
But significant amounts of that waste could be avoided through repairs. According to a study,
only 40% of electronics breakdowns in France are repaired. But surveys have found nearly
two-thirds of Europeans would rather repair their products than buy new ones. French officials
truly believe the current system is broken and needs to be fixed.
In an effort to defuse this vast amount of avoidable waste, France's National Assembly last
year voted to introduce an index of "reparability" ratings for appliances such as washing
machines, lawnmowers, televisions and smartphones. In doing so, the French government
hopes to increase the electronics repair rate to 60% within five years.

Gurgaon: A three-year-old male leopard was hit by a speeding vehicle near the Western
Peripheral Expressway in Nuh on Saturday morning. The leopard was found to be conscious,
but could not move because of the injury. It was later taken to the Rohtak zoo for treatment
and officials said it should be fine in due course of time.
The injured leopard was spotted on the roadside at around 9 a.m. by one of the villagers in
the area. It had been hit by a vehicle between Tauru and Padheni village of Nuh. In the last 14
years, 10 leopards have died in road accidents in south Haryana.
After being informed by the villagers, a team of wildlife department officials from Gurgaon
rushed to the spot with nets, cage and a tranquiliser gun. As the leopard was injured, it took
the team just 10 minutes to put the big cat in the cage. The leopard was first taken to a
treatment centre in Sultanpur National Park and then to Rohtak zoo.
“The leopard wasn’t able to move as it was injured. It was conscious and our team lifted it
carefully and put it in the cage. We didn’t tranquilise it. It has been referred to Rohtak zoo for
treatment,” said Rajesh Chahal, wildlife inspector, Gurgaon.
Asked if there is an underpass in the area for the wild animals to cross the expressway,
Chahal said, “Yes, there is a wildlife underpass near the area where the incident occurred.”
Meanwhile, wildlife activists said these highways had fragmented the Aravalis and bisected
the corridor used by the wild animals to traverse from Asola Wildlife sanctuary in Delhi,
passing through Gurgaon, to Sariska in Rajasthan.
“It is high time that the Haryana government imposed speed restrictions of 40-50 kmph on
these corridors,” said Vaishali Rana Chandra, a wildlife activist.

Comprehension:
The usual perception of a wetland is a sprawling lake far away from a city, distant from
humans, entirely pristine and therefore, lush with biodiversity. However, our research presents
interesting new findings about these entities. Wetlands are in fact embedded in our towns and
cities. It is often believed that such urban water bodies aren’t ecologically useful. But these
water bodies play a crucial role in supporting bird life — and the ecosystem services this
brings. Our research explored ponds across Delhi which is quite unique in terms of retaining
many urban forests, a protected floodplain and patches of the Aravalli hills. These diverse
habitats — and the location of Delhi in the middle of a major migratory pathway of birds —
have led to over 470 bird species being recorded in the city, the second-longest such list for
any capital globally.
A major reason for this avian abundance is that the Delhi Development Authority (DDA)
disallows the destruction of water bodies over a hectare in size. This has enabled 570 ponds
to survive — the histories of these ponds are as varied as their appearance, from being
village ponds to temple tanks, rainwater harvesting structures, water bodies made in parks,
etc. Delhi’s ponds aren’t managed collectively — each is in the hands of municipalities,
welfare associations or other institutions. Consequently, every pond has its own
characteristics. Some are heavily managed, others are entirely ignored, some are accessible,
others are hard to approach. The water quality, garbage levels and foliage also vary.
Importantly, this variety allows multiple birds to use these ponds. We found at least 177
species at the 39 water bodies — ponds comprise less than 0.5% of the area of Delhi but
provide a home to over 40% of the city’s bird species. These included species of global
conservation concern like the common pochard, the ferruginous pochard, the river lapwing,
the black-headed ibis and the painted stork. Also, ponds with less management interventions
had greater diversity of habitats birds could use — as these interventions grew, the number of
bird species declined. We found 46% birds were wetland specialists while the rest used the
trees and shrubs on the edges of ponds.
