Explain and Elaborate
Business Operations
Business operations refer to the daily activities that the business engages in to increase the
value of the enterprise. These activities generate revenue and earn profit for the business
owners. The employees help accomplish the goals of the business by performing functions
such as marketing, accounting, and manufacturing.
Element Description
3
Element Description
Staffing It defines who will work on the planned process. That’s why it is
dependent on the processes laid out. For example, a small
business might need people who are generalists, while large
businesses might need people who are specialists.
Location The location is also important for certain types of businesses. For
example, a consultant might need a room with a desk at home, a
shop for a mechanic, and so on.
1. Measure performance.
A business should come up with a realistic means of measuring its milestones. The
process of measuring the performance starts with the goal-setting stage. Business
management should set achievable objectives with clear targets.
4
2. Keep up with the latest trends.
The business should stay up to date with the latest in the industry to get ideas of how to
beat the competitors. Knowing the latest trends can help the business find a new system
that will improve performance, cut losses, or stay compliant with new regulations.
3. Streamline processes.
Another way of improving business operations is to follow the trends in the industry to
increase productivity. The management should be continually looking for new tools,
software, or equipment that will improve and ease critical processes.
Operation Workflow
An operation workflow represents a repeatable pattern of business activity by organizing
resources into processes that transform materials, provide services, or process information.
2. Identify redundancies.
In business, there are a lot of unnecessary and redundant tasks that may take place
daily. Once the entrepreneurs have more insight into the process, they can determine
what activities are truly unnecessary. Identifying and eliminating
5
redundant tasks creates value for the business. Instead of wasting time on useless
tasks, the employees will be able to focus on more important tasks. The more useless
processes eliminated, the better the business will perform.
6
Operation Workflow Diagram
An operation workflow diagram refers to the visual layout of a business process. It represents
the various tasks involved, and the team members who will execute the tasks. It also serves as
an outline of the key operations, a written procedure for a process, an action plan for the
objectives, a benchmark for products and services, and a staff management plan.
Situationer:
An entrepreneur with a business that engages in e-commerce illustrates the operation workflow
of his firm.
