Book information: To Kill a Mockingbird is set in the fictional town of Maycomb, Alabama,

during the Great Depression (1929–39). The story centers on Jean Louise (“Scout”) Finch,
an unusually intelligent girl who ages from six to nine years old during the novel.

Author information: Harper Lee was an American writer best known for her Pulitzer
Prize-winning novel To Kill a Mockingbird, which was her only published work for 55 years
until the 2015 publication of Go Post a Sentinel but was previously written by the author (a
mid fifties) and that it is actually the first draft of his first novel.
Book summary: To Kill a Mockingbird is both a young girl's coming-of-age story and a
darker drama about the roots and consequences of racism and prejudice, probing how good
and evil can coexist within a single community or individual.

Themes in the book: The themes that Harper Lee wants to put are family life and courage,
which along with the theme of prejudice, can all be seen through the trial of Tom Robinson
and in the daily lives of the inhabitants of Maycomb.

Conflict: In this extract we find two types of conflict, characters vs characters and
characters vs nature. The first one is Scout against Atticus and the second is Scout against
the law.

Characters: The main characters in the extract are Scout, Atticus and Miss Coraline.

Setting: The characters talking in their houses but the problem was in the school.
