Objective • To control the risks associated with the deployment of chemicals


in EPE throughout the entire life cycle ensuring continuous
technical, operational & HSE improvement.

Directive In order to be able to realise the objective and to comply with the
policy, the following directives apply

• Chemicals shall only be used after consideration and rejection


of mechanical alternatives.
• Deployment of chemicals shall be in accordance with specific
permit related legal requirements where applicable
• Deployment of chemicals is permitted only after appropriate
authorisation in accordance with “Procedure: Approve
Chemicals” [6]
• Risk assessments shall be carried out for tasks involving
chemicals deemed as hazardous
• HSE evaluations of chemicals shall be carried out according
to legislation in the various EPE countries
• In the relevant EP business processes, procedures and work
instructions shall be in place for all tasks involving the use of
hazardous chemicals.

Control requirements
• Offshore Installation Managers, Senior Shell representatives on
mobile drilling rigs and Projects, Plant Installation Managers,
Area Team Leaders for land based production areas, the Chief
Production Chemist for onshore laboratories and Office
Services (delivery) Heads for office areas shall be responsible
for all chemicals on their location(s).
• Location specific Approved Chemicals Lists shall be maintained
by the Chemical Support Team and can be viewed via the EPE
Chemical Information Portal.
• Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDSs) complying with EC
and/or national legislation shall be accessible for all hazardous
chemicals. Electronic copies of MSDSs for chemicals on the

Approved Chemicals Lists shall be maintained by the Chemical


Support Team and be available via the EPE Chemical
Information Portal.
• An EPE rolling plan for minimisation of environmental impact of
chemicals shall be in place.
• A forum of experts shall review and improve the effectiveness
of the Chemical Management System in all chemical lifecycle
activities.
