PROBLEM SOLVING IN MOLARITY AND MOLALITY.  SHOW SOLUTION.

1. What is the volume of a 0.2 M AgNO3 solution containing 8.5 grams of AgNO3?
Answer:

2.  What is the molarity of a solution containing 5.035 grams of FeCl3 in enough water to make
500 mL of solution?
Answer:
no of moles=given mass/gram molecular mass
no of moles =5.035/162
no of moles=0.031
vol of solution=500/1000
vol of solution=1/2=0.5
molarity=no of moles of solute/vol of solution in l
molarity=0.031/0.5
molarity=0.062
3.  What is the volume of a 0.1 M HCl solution containing 1.46 grams of HCl?
Answer:

4.  What is the molarity of a solution containing 72.9 grams of HCl in enough water to make 500
mL of solution?
Answer:
no of moles of solute =given mass/gram molecular mass
no of moles of solute=72.9/36=2.02
vol of solution in l=0.5litre
molarity=no of moles of solute/gram molecular mass
molarity=2.02/0.5
molarity=4.04molar
5.  How many grams of HNO3 are required to prepare 500 mL of a 0.601 M HNO3 solution?
Answer:

6.  A 4 g sugar cube (Sucrose: C12H22O11) is dissolved in a 350 ml teacup of 80 °C water.

What is the molality of the sugar solution?  Given: Density of water at 80° = 0.975 g/ml
Answer:
Solute is 4 g of C12H22O11
C12H22O11 = (12)(12) + (1)(22) + (16)(11)
C12H22O11 = 144 + 22 + 176
C12H22O11 = 342 g/mol
4 g / (342 g/mol) = 0.0117 mol

density = mass/volume
mass = density x volume
mass = 0.975 g/ml x 350 ml
mass = 341.25 g
mass = 0.341 kg
molality = molsolute / msolvent
molality = 0.0117 mol / 0.341 kg
molality = 0.034 mol/kg

The molality of the sugar solution is 0.034 mol/kg.

7.  What is the molality of a solution of 10 g NaOH in 500 g water? (Molecular weight of NaOH
is 40)
Answer:
moles of NaOH = 10 g NaOH × 1mol NaOH/40.00g NaOH = 0.25 mol NaOH

kilograms of H₂O = 500 g H₂O × 1kg H₂O/1000g H₂O = 0.500 kg H₂O

molality = moles of solute/kilograms of solvent=0.25mol/0.500kg = 0.50 mol/kg
