-Ishita Kheria (01916503519)

ABSTRACT

With advent of globalisation and advancement in technologies, the market for connected cars
has significantly exacerbated, and is bound to transform the automobile industry in the near
future. They transform the user experience by offering features like Wi-fi access, high-
definition streaming media and the ability to remotely control certain aspects like
locking/unlocking and ignition mechanism in the car. As a corollary to this, there is a
potential risk of cyber-crimes. Security breaches can lead to unauthorized collection of
personal data, threat to the safety mechanism and, in acute situations, even full remote control
of the car can be done by a third-party. Failing to address these risks could have a detrimental
effect on consumer confidence, privacy and brand reputation. This paper seeks to analyse the
data protection law and Information Technology Act in India with respect to automobile
industry and whether we are adequately equipped for the future developments. Further, the
author also wishes to discuss the impending issues and the steps that can be taken for
compliance.
