His father had come from Japan. His family did not have much money. Daniel was a happy boy, though. He liked playing baseball, and he kept pigeons. He started to think about his life. He dreamed about doing something big. — ] World War II In 1941, Japan attacked Hawaii. A place called Pearl Harbor was bombed. It was not far from Daniel’s home. Daniel knew he had to help. He knew first aid. He jumped on his bike and rode to help people who were hurt. Because of the attack, the United States went to war. Daniel wanted to fight for his country. He joined the army and fought hard in World War II. He was hurt badly, but he became a hero. He won many medals. “ = ——.. From Student to Senator After the war, Daniel went to college and law school. Then he decided he wanted to work in the government. He became an important leader in Hawaii. In 1959, Hawaii became the fiftieth state in the United States. Daniel became Hawaii's first congressman. A few years later, he became a United States senator. He has been a senator for many years.
