Ramon Valera, whose ancestors are from Abra, made a significant contribution
via the tradition of excellence in his works and his dedication to his profession. He did this by performing
his magically ground-breaking inventions on the Philippine terno. The style of his works are simple and
very artistic.
According to legend, Valera created the terno, which has become the nation's emblematic symbol over
the world. A four-piece outfit made up of a blouse, skirt, overskirt, and long scarf was created by Valera in
the early 1940s as a single article of apparel. In order to create a single dress with exaggerated bell
sleeves, a waistband that was tightened, an ankle-grazing hem, and a back zipper, he combined the
elements of the baro't saya. For the elite of the nation, switching from hooks to zippers was already a
dramatic step.
