However, thers is alvaye a risk that the breaker will not succeed to interrupt the fault current and that the fault clear ing tine vill be dependent on how fast the back-up protection schemes can initiate fault clearing. Increasing power aystem complexity Gemande shorter and shorter fault clearing times, for example to naintein the stability of ‘the power systen. It is therefore often necessary to provide each cizcuit breaker vith a local back-up protection scheme, comprising a breaker failure relay, If a power cirauit: beaker is unsnoceas- ful to clear a feult, for example due to a stucked brecker pole, trippitg of adjacent cirexit breakers is provided by the breaker failure relay after a preset tims, A simple and secure way to verify correst operation of a power cixouit breaker is to detect that after a certain time, vhich is sufficiently long for the oizeuit breaker to nommally operate, there is 20 longer any current Uarovgi the bresker. Type RATCA hao throo cummont noacuring mite which provide a possibility te neasure the three phase cuxtents or tvo these currents and the zero sequence current. The busaker failure relay is nob supplisd with auciliary voltage during normal service, This feature results in no battery dzain as the ourzent measuring wits ave not continuously supplied from the aaxiliary voltage souxce, so theze will be zero power consumption. An additional advantage is also obtained. Possible contact distur dances are prevented if the relay is supplied with a distorted cur vent close to the set value, since the d.c. power is only supplied during a fault for wiich the relay is initiated to operate. The tripping impulse of the protective relay which starts the bres ker failave relay io supplied via tho contacts of the currant moo~ suring units to a time measuring mit. If the current throngh the pover cirenit tweaker still is above the set value of the current isssuring unite after the set tine, the breaker failure relay pro- vides a tripping lupulse to adjacent circuit breakers, In the sane gtation. Infor, INFORMATION RK 651-302 EB Fromoao ag. Peso ‘RFR, December 1982 © 7429 3 Edition 2 ‘type RAIGA is available with one oz two time steps, that is with one time measuring wilt and with two time measuring units. The twe step version provides added scourity for tight breaker failure margina, One step of the version with to tine steps can be set short and be started by for exeaple a three-phase short-circuit relay. This provides shorter tripping times for feults which can cause instability in the system. However, this must be compared with the risk when having decreased margins between the nomnal clearing time of the breeker and the set time of the time measuring unit. ‘Ts RATGA versions with two time stepe can be sed in appli- cations vhen it is desized to differentiate between tvo different types of faults. Yor evanple, one time measuring unit Le set short for three phase feults waich ave the least probable in occurance, but nowt govere 40 the stability of the system. The other time measuring mit is set longer to provide gneater breaker feilure margin, because all other types of faults are uost probable but less critical than theee-phase fevlte, and they have longer allowable clearing tame, The total clearing time of the breaker failure relay ig show in Fig. 3, illustrating a time co-orlination chart, see page 6. Auxiliary relay for additional primary tripping impulse Filter unit The AIGA velay also includes an auxiliary relay which instantaneously seals in through the contacts of the ourrent measuring units, Gontacts of thé auxilieay reley send a second trip signal via sspamate wives to the second trip coil of the primary cixeuit breaker to assure that it receives a tripping inpulse. This feature would prevent tripping of the back-up circuit breakers if the normal tripping circuit has an interruption. Tous, only the primexy cizoait breeker vould be tripped incteaa of the back-up circuit breakers. The phase current neacuring mits which vere operated by load current would eset the tine measuring uit after the suxiliary reley tips the primazy cizcait breaker.
