Extra Lecture notes- Mayo’s Human relations

1. Mayo said Taylor’s SM had neglected the human factor in

organisations & only took the production view.

2. Taylor said workers were only motivated by money. The more

work they the more money they will get paid. Taylor paid by
‘piece rates’ and not ‘hourly rates’ (explain to class).

Features of Mayo’s theory

1. Focus on group of employees- human emotions, perceptions, ideas.

Organisation output is determined by ‘human relations’ not only be
economic & technological forces.

2. Informal organisations- Mayo says organisations have both a

‘formal’ and ‘informal’ aspects & ‘informal’ aspect exist within
the formal aspect (eg desire for belong & accepted by work
group).

3. Participatory management - managers listen to employee

suggestions & ideas (eg QCC in Japan). Makes a organisation
environment more pleasant, prevents alienation, & results in
increased productivity.

Criticisms of Mayos theory

1. His hidden aim was to exploit workers by in a nicer way then
Taylor.
2. Mayo aim was to ‘control’ workers in a nicer way.
